TALENT PRODUCED IN ART CLASSES PRINCIPAL'S REPORT TO BOARD Art classes at the Rangiora High School are becoming increasingly popular among the pupils, according to Mr G. C. Beattie, acting-principal. Mr Beattie told the High School board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening that six looms for weaving and tools necessary for lino cutting had been made in the workshop and that considerable talent had already been shown in the work accomplished. Willingness to share with the Rangiora Borough Council the cost of renovating about four chains of Wales street in front of the school was expressed by the board. A decision was also made to have certain paths in the school grounds repaired during the coming term holidays. A letter was received from the New Zealand. Anglican Bible Class Union thanking the board for granting it the use of the High School building for the Dominion camp. The camp will be held during the summer holidays from December 28 until January 9. MAGISTRATE'S COURT AT RANGIORA TRAFFIC OFFENDERS DEALT WITH For breaches of the traffic regulations the following were fined and ordered to pay costs when they appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., at the fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Rangiora yesterday: No warrant of fitness—Marmaduke Spencer Bower, 10s; Raymond Denis Catherwood, 10s; Arthur Ernest Cross, 10s; Conrad Gustav Hamann. 10s; James Murray Hegan, 10s; Roy Hamilton Nairn, 10s; Duncan Robert Petrie, 10s; Allan Palmer Smith, 10s; Edgar Hickmott, £2. For having inefficient brakes on his car, Norman John Clinton (Mr E. D. R. Smith) was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. Walter James Goodwin was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs for having on his motor-lorry a load overlapping the prescribed width set down by the Transport Department. For using an unregistered car, Charles Henry Powell (Mr H. K. Kippenberger) was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. For being £l2 in arrears with a maintenance order, Robert Jury was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant ' to be suspended so long as in addition to the current maintenance he pays 2s 6d a week. PERSONAL NOTES RANGIORA A decision to write to Miss Margaret Dalziell congratulating her on having represented Canterbury University College in its debate with the Le Moyne College negro debating team was made by the Rangiora High School Board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. It was mentioned that Miss Dalziell had received her secondary school education at Rangiora. Mr C. Rands (chairman of the Rangiora County Council) was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Rangiora yesterday. MARSHLAND Mr and Mrs Fleming (Auckland) are the guests of Mrs Crawford, sen., Belfast road. Mr Cooper has returned from a holiday visit to the North Island. Mr Sydney Harris is an inmate of St. George's Hospital. Mr J. J. Blackburn and Mr D. Goode have returned from Wellington, where they attended a meeting of the Onion Growers' executive. POTATO GROWING COMPETITION AWARDS TO MARSHLAND SCHOOL Mr Goode presided at the monthly meeting of the Marshland: School Committee. In his report the headmaster said that the roll number was 100, and the attendance was fair. Shrubs had been planted in the school grounds. The potato-growing competition under the auspices of the Boys' and Girls' Agriculture Clubs had been completed, the winners for Marshland being Ron Boyd 1, Lawrence Free 2, Alex. Kiesanowski 3. The committee decided to give prizes to these boys. The sum of £5 was voted for the purchase of new* library books. RELIEF GRANTED BY WAR FUND REPORT TO TRUSTEES AT SOUTHBRIDGE The balance-sheet, certified as. correct by the Government Audit Office, and presented at the annual meeting of the Southbridge War Fund Trustees, showed that £SO was spent during the year on relief to returned soldiers, leaving a credit of £373. Further relief was authorised on the recommendation of the secretary of the Southbridge Returned Soldiers' Association. WOMEN'S HOCKEY AT MALVERN Results of matches in the Malvern Women's Hockey Sub-Association competitions are:—Greendale 4, Darfield 0; Hororata 2, Kirwee 0. All hockey in Malvern will be postponed on Saturday to allow players to attend the test match. Indians v. New Zealand. SCHOOL SPORTS AT MARSHLAND Burwood and Marshland School football and basketball teams played at Marshland recently, the home teams winning both matches.
