RIVER EROSION NEAR

SELWYN

USE OF BULLDOZER SUGGESTED MR H. E. HERRING, M.P., MAKES INSPECTION A recommendation that a bulldozer be put into operation in the Selwyn river-bed to build up a bank of shingle from the river-bed as protection for the farms in the area, which are frequently flooded, will be made to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) after an inspection of the area made by Mr H. E. Herring, M.P., during the week-end. Mr Herring said that the bank of the river about eight miles below Hororata was very low and the farms were endangered. If a river wall was built up the willows would bind it. About 6000 acres of tussock country was also inspected in the same district by Mr Herring, who has suggested that the Government acquire the area and include it in its scheme of afforestation. He considers that the planting of the area would be an ideal project for the absorption of unemployed labour. Mr Herring has written to the Ellesmere County Council and the South Rakaia and Mount Hutt Road Boards, suggesting that if they have any project suitable for the absorption of unemployed labour, that they apply for assistance under the same scheme that has been adopted in the Ashburton district.
