OBITUARY

MR JOHN GREIG Mr John Greig, a prominent builder in Christchurch lor many years, died suddenly at his residence, Fendaltoo. last week. Mr Greig, who was bora in Rothesay, in the Isle of Bute, ia 1859, came to New Zealand with his parents in 1873, and later became a builder, working in various parts of New Zealand and Australia in his early years. While in Australia Mr Greig took part in the Kalgoorlie gold rush. On his return to New Zealand, Mr Greig joined the late Mr Peter Graham in partnership, and the firm of Graham and Greig secured the contracts for many of the prominent buildings in Christchurch over a period of about 20 years. Mr Greig suffered a sever* illness in 1912 which compelled lum to retire from active business. After his retirement, however, he maintained a • keen interest in the timber business, is which he had had wide experienceAs a young man, Mr Greig took a . keen interest in education. He was ; one of the founders of the Melbourne I Working Men’s Club, and one of th?£ oldest members of the Christchurch* Working Men’s Club. July 1L The death occurred in the Greytowa Hospital yesterday afternoon of Mr William Wilson Bird, aged 88. Mr Bird was first employed by Mr Alexander Sutherland, of Lyall Bay, Wellington, in 1864, and came to “Ngaipu,” Hinakura, in 1875, where he worked for the sons, Messrs William and David Sutherland, who are now both dead, and up to the time of his death for the sons of Mr David Sutherland and Messrs Alexander and Kenneth Sutherland. Altogether he served 74 years in the employ of one family, which is claimed to be a New Zealand record.
