A CATHEDRAL FOR WELLINGTON

APPEAL FOR FUNDS TO BE LAUNCHED SYNOD TO RECEIVE PLANS THIS MONTH (PRESS ASSOCIATIOH TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 4. Plans for the new Anglican Cathedral, the foundation stone of which will be laid in 1940, as part of the Church of England’s contribution to the New Zealand Centennial celebrations, will be laid before the Wellington Diocesan Synod when it meets on July 14. At the close of the Synod on July 19 an appeal for funds for building the cathedral will be launched at a mass meeting at the Town Hall in Wellington, when the speakers will include the leaders of the Church and State, the Government, and the Opposition. The cost of the cathedral is estimated at £2*30,000. So far the greater part of the first £40,000 has been raised in gifts and bequests, apart from a special fund of £46,000 which has been devoted to the purchase of the site, on the corner of Molesworth street and Hill street, which has been acquired by the church. There remains the formidable task of raising about £200,000 for the completion of the work. The architect responsible for the designs, Mr Cecil Wood, of Christchurch, is at present in Europe studying cathedral architecture. It is understood that he has placed tentative plans before > the church authorities, which will be laid before the Synod at its session in a fortnight’s time, but that as the result of his trip abroad some slight alterations to the interior will have to be made.
