The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple), who spent the week-end in Christchurch, returned to Wellington by the steamer express last evening. He did not have any engagements yesterday. The Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) arrived in Christchurch from the south yesterday morning and had a number of private interviews during the day before leaving on his return to Wellington last evening. A motion of sympathy with Cr. T. Milliken in the death of his father was carried last night by the Christchurch City Council. Cr. J. W. Beanland was last evening given leave of absence from the City Council to enable him to visit Australia. He will be away for between two and three months. Mr Charles Spring, who recently was appointed to the staff of Messrs J. Ingiis Wright, Ltd., advertising agents, commenced his duties yesterday as manager of his firm’s Christchurch office. Mr G. T. Alley, director of the Country Library Service, is visiting Christchurch. Mr John E. Bates, of Auckland, governing director of John Bates and Company, Ltd., is visiting Christchurch. The following were elected members of the Canterbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association when the association’s committee met yesterday;— Messrs A. W. Packard, T. H. Anderson, E. M. Sampson, Mrs R. E, Wayborn, Mr and Mrs H. B. Stansell. By decree dated April 2, 1938, the French Government has conferred the cross of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour on two Auckland men, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and Commander C. H. T. Palmer, president of the Auckland branch of the Navy League. Sir Ernest Davis is well known as a friend of France and he has taken every opportunity of showing his affection for that country by his support of everything French, and his courtesy and hospitality to French naval officers who periodically visit New Zealand. Commander Palmer is always prominent in the preparation of programmes of entertainments for officers and ratings of French warships during their yearly cruise in New Zealand waters.
