WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MOUNT PLEASANT The Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute celebrated its fourth birthday anniversary at “Stoneycroft,” the home of Mrs A. Morten. The proceedings opened with the singing .of the ode, and the^ president (Mrs Woodford) welcomed the guests and introduced Mr Te Ari Pitama and his party of entertainers.
A delightful exposition of Maori art in song and dance was much appreciated.
During an interval posies of flowers, the gift of Mrs C. G. Burgess, were presented to Mesdames Beck and Roberts, representing Mairehau and Redcliffs Institutes respectively, and Mesdames Morten, Edgar. Pitama, and Woodford. •
An entertaining play, produced by Mrs H. Edgar, was presented ;by the institute’s own drama circle. Those takings part included Mesdames H. D. Gale, W. Turland, A. Macdonnell, E. Cossar, G. A. K. Williams, and Miss Joan Rigg. , , Afternoon tea was served, with the addition of a birthday cake made and decorated by Mrs Woodford. " Mr Woodford also presented a banner to the institute.'
Greetings Were received from the Mount Pleasant Boating Club. The hostesses were Mesdames Morten, Hughes, Smart, McLachlan. and Miss M. Morten. -
TEMPLETON The Templeton Women’s Institute met recently. Mrs Curragh preside I. The roll call was “What I should like demonstrated.” A travel talk was given by Mrs Carter (Prebbleton). Competition winners were:—Knitted article: Miss Henshaw 1, Mrs Turnbull 2, Mesdames Curragh and Taylor (equal) 3. Preserved fruit: Mrs Kissel 1, Mrs Henshaw 2. Bloom: Mrs Henshaw 1, Mrs Clinton 2, Mrs Curragh 3. An invitation to the Ladbrooks birthday was accepted. CHEVIOT The Cheviot Women’s Institute met recently. Husbands and friends were present. Mrs G. L. Nell presided. A talk on the planting of chrysanthemums was given by Mrs C. W. Dalgety. Impromptu speeches were held oh the possibility of Cheviot being supplied with electricity. - A talk was given by Messrs G. Struthers and C. F. Holton on their recent visit to Sydney with the . New Zealand contingent of returned soldiers. Community singing took place and items were given by Messrs G. Struthers, L. Fuller, and R. Burnett. Accompanists were Miss' G. Morgan and Mr G. AKAROA Miss M. Jacobson, president, presided at a committee meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. An invitation was received to the birthday party of the Chorlton and Little Akaloa Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mrs C. Petterson, honorary secretary, reported that the net proceeds from the birthday party were £5 9s. Mrs T. E. McKenzie consented to take charge of the bring-and-buy stall and the social half-hour at the July meeting. WAIKARI The monthly meeting of the Waikari Women’s Institute was held recently with Mrs H. M. Cocks presiding. Mrs
W. Honeybone cave the “golden thread talk on favourite authors. Mrs Cocks, because of leaving the district, resigned as president. For the members, Mrs J. B. Rage presented her with a clock. Mrs L. Hook was elected president. , , ~ Mrs Fairbairn gave a demonstration on paper flower work. Competitions resulted 33 follows; Handkerchief; Miss A. Trounce 1, Mrs A. Phipps 2. Queen cakes; Mrs B. L. Blunden 1, Mrs M. Codyre 2. Bloom: Mrs J. B. Page 1, Mrs L. Rowe 2. Hostesses were Mrs A. Phipps and Miss L. Phipps.
LINCOLN A meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute was held recently, the junior members taking charge. Miss D. Moir presided and Miss I. Woods acted as secretary. Monthly competitions were judged by Mesdames J. W. Stewart and C. Moody, and resulted .as follows: — Senior —Peggy square: Mrs Templeton 1, Mrs Watkins 2, Mrs H. Greayes 3. Tomato relish: Mrs C. E. Watkins 1, Mrs A. H. Button 2, Mrs E, Carter 3. Bloom: Mrs W. Templeton 1, Mrs E. Carter and Mrs Moreland (equal) 2, Mrs G. S. Peryman 3. Junior—Peggy square: Mrs J. Bennett 1, Miss N. Peryman 2, Miss D. Moir 3. Tomato relish; Mrs J. Bennett 1. Bloom: Miss N. Peryman 1. A social was held, Mr J. W. Stewart and Mr F. Roesler playing the music and Misses I. Woods and T. Reardon the extras. Mr G. S. -Peryman was master of ceremonies. Competitions were won by Messrs C. E. Watkijas and W. H. Dodd, and Misses Mona Hay, T. Reardon, and Mrs G. S. Peryman. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr M. Moody and Miss P. Guilford. Hostesses were Misses I. Woods, R. Mills, and D. Moir.
DUVAUCHELLE The ninth birthday party of the Duvauchelle Women’s -Institute was held recently. The president. Miss Mavis Hayward, welcomed the visitors. A programme of one-act plays, sketches, and “Gipsy Camp” was given. Mr L. Cairns was master of ceremonies, and presented Mrs A. M. Manhire, producer of the two plays, with a bouquet from those taking part. ■* The birthday cake was cut by Miss Mavis Hayward and Mrs F. A. Lewthwaite. A competition was won by Mrs Les Giddens. The music for dancing was played by the MinmfieHarwood orchestra. SHEFFIELD The Sheffield Women’s Institute met recently. Mrs C. R. Rollinson presided. Miss McGuire gave a demonstration on embroidery and tapestry work. A talk on a famous woman (Queen Victoria) was given ,by Mrs M. Bull. Results of competitions were: Bloom, Miss Cogan 1. Mrs L. Wright 2, Mrs Rollinson 3; cake, Mrs Page 1, Miss Lilley 2, Mrs Rollinson 3. Hostesses were Mrs M. Smith, Mrs Gamble. Mrs H O. Judd.
