Reconciling Powers With Rights
WATCHFULNESS URGED BY MR ATTLEE
(British official wireless.) (Received July 1, 8.10 p.m.) RUGBY, June 30. In the House of Commons debate on the relation of members’ privileges to action under the Official Secrets Act, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr C. R. Attlee), said the supreme issue on which the House would expect guidance from the Select Committee was the reconciliation of the exercise by the Govern-
ment of the powers which it was essential it should possess for efficient administration and the safety of the country with the exercise by Members of Parliament of the rights it was essential they should possess for preserving the liberties of a free, democratic people. In days when liberty was challenged and derided in other countries, we must be specially diligent in preserving the rights of Parliament, Mr Attlee said. , The Select Committee, which has 14 members, will have power to send for persons, papers, and records.
