MINERS' STRIKE IN SOUTHLAND
Hope of Settlement During
Week-end
" (press association telegram.)
INVERCARGILL, July 1,
Prospects of a settlement of the coal strike during the week-end were mentioned to-night by the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie), who has been in touch with both parties. Negotiations for a settlement were begun yesterday and continued to-day. The Conciliation Commissioner conferred with the miners’ representatives this afternoon, and tonight he met the owners. Mr Ritchie stated that an offer and a. counter-offer had been made by the parties. In those offers was the nucleus of a settlement, but the negotiations were not completed and would be continued to-morrow. It was hoped that a settlement would be reached during the week-end. . '
