RAINFALL FOR JUNE
OXFORD
The rainfall for June was 4.63 inches falling on 13 days. Last June it was 4.52 inches falling on 10 days.-.. The average for the month for 28 years is 2.71 inches. During that period the highest rainfall for the month was 5.87 inches in 1925. and the lowest .47 inches in 1933. Since the beginning of the year the amount registered is 26.21 inches, as against 20.43 inches for the same period last year.
RANGIORA
Heavy rain, which has been falling at Rangiora since Tuesday evening, brought the total rainfall for the month of June to four inches. This is 1.25 inches above the fall for the corresponding month last year. For the six months ending June 30. the total rainfall was 18.19 inches, while over the same period last year only 12.47 inches of rain was recorded.
HORORATA
Weather observations recorded by Mr ' Jewell, ‘‘Terrace Station,’-' -Horo rata. -for June, show that rain fell on 11 days, the maximum fall being on June 30 of 90 points. Rainfall for June was 3.75 inches as compared with 3.07 inches for June. 1937. Rainfall for this year to the end of June was 21.93 inches as compared with 19.22 inches for the same period last year. Sixteen frosts were registered in June, the most severe being 15 degress on June 17.
ELLESMERE
Up to yesterday morning the rainfall in various parts of the Ellesmere district since Wednesday night was as follows;—Meadowbank, 1-37 inches; Oakleigh, 1.64 inches: Rsvensworth, 1.51 inches.
Not for 27 years at least the period over which Mr A. J. Inwood has been keeping records at Southbridge. has there been such a wet June as this year, the total being 5.84 inches, as compared with 3.25 inches in June of last year. For the half year to June 30 the total was 18,29 inches. The June average for 25 years is 2.50 inches. In June of 1925 the fall totalled 5.51 inches. There were 23 frosts last month,' the hardest being 15J degrees, on June 16.
LABOUR PARTY
KAIKOURA BRANCH
Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P. CWairau) addressed a meeting at Oaro recently M-: W. Foote presided.
Mr Meachen described how the Labour Party had improved the conditions of the working man in every way possible and provided for higher wages and shorter hours. Mr W. Sanders, organiser of the Wairau electorate, also addressed the meeting. At the end of Mr Heathen's address the following resolution • was carried: “That this meeting of debtors of Oaro desires to express sincere gratitude to the Government for greater improved conditions, both socially and economically We also express ouri thanks and confidence In our member, the Government and in Mr Tirikatene. the member for the Southern Maori Electorate.” Mr Meachen also addressed a meeting at Aniseed, where a tribute was paid to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon, R. Semole) and a motion of thanks and confidence to the member for the district and In the Labour Government was carried.
CULVERDEN GOLF CLUB
Mr W. V. Mockett presided at a committee meeting of the Culverden Golf Club on Thursday night Mr G. H. Loffhagen was elected to the vacancy on the committee. It was decided to hold the club’s annual ball on August 18. Mr H. M. Searle was appointed to take charge of the greens. It was resolved that the limit of the handicaps for the Gudsell Cup be 28 this year, and the cup be decided on match play.
WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION
Mr J. G. Caughey," of Canterbury College, organiser for the Workers’ Educational Association, gave an address at a Labour Parly meeting in Kaikoura, explaining the objects of the association. Mr D. Manson, president of the Kaikoura branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, presided, and gave Mr .Caughey a very warm welcome on behalf of the members.
QUEEN CARNIVAL
CROWNING CEREMONY
So much interest has been taken in a queen carnival held to raise funds for the Ellesmere Brass Band that three crowning ceremonies have been necessary to afford all residents an opportunity of attending. Two of these have taken place at Leeston and one at Southbridge. The successful candidate was Miss Mary Lambie. the Lake-side-Sedgemere representative, and on each occasion the crowning was performed with the customary pomp and ceremony. Each of the four queen candidates was attended by maids of honour and page boys, and the principal officials were; The Bishop. Dr. W. G. Volckman; Lord Chancellor. Mr J. A. Scott: Guards. Messrs J. Aiken and A. Mitchell: Mistress of the Robes. Airs Volckman. Numerous “honours" were conferred. The gross proceeds of the carnival amount to considerably more than £SOO.

AKAROA GIRL GUIDES
CANTERBURY COMMISSIONER’S VISIT
The Canterbury Provincial Commissioner, Miss Bromley Cocks, visited Akaroa on Wednesday to pass the newly-formed Akaroa Girl Guide! troop through their tenderfoot examination and enrolment. She was accompanied by Miss Morton, commissioner and camp advisor. They were met by Acting-Captain Miss Averil Mclntosh. The following guides were enrolled at the scout hall: Judith Helps, Barbara Naismitb, Marie May, and Morven PooL The candidates for enrolment were presented by Miss S. Dalbeth.
The following committee was enrolled:—Mesdames P. Peoples, S. G. Naismith, E. May, Misses E. Jacobson, N. Old, S, Brown, and Pollock. The visiting provincial commissioner addressed the guides and members of the committee, giving a history of the girl guide movement.
LINCOLN PLOUGHING MATCH
A meeting of the Lincoln Ploughing Match Association was held in the Public Hall. In the absence of the president Mr M. Fleming was voted to the chair..

KAIKOURA VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for the Kaikoura district for the quarter ending on June 30, compared with the same period last year, were:—Births, 13 (13); deaths, 5 <6); marriages, 8 (5). For the halfyear the figures were:—Births, 39 (32); deaths, 10 (12); marriages, 15 (11).

St Peter's Church branch of the Mothers’ Union held the monthly meeting in the Parish Hall on Wednesday. Mrs A. J.
