HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
NATIONAL SHOWS HELD DURING YEAR
LACK OF PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR OTHER DISPLAYS
The most important event of the year was the National Flower Show in January, states the annual report of the Canterbury Horticultural Sosciety. The society’s spring show was also a feature,. the National Daffodil Society’s classes being incorporated in the schedule. The society regrets that the rose, dahlia, and chrysanthemum exhibitions were not better supported by the public. Instruction lectures and demonstrations have been held, and visits have been paid to the gardens of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and Mr and Mrs E. F. Stead. Referring to the garden competitions, the report says that the standard of gardens entered in the factory section was higher, and these gardens did much to make Christchurch A the garden city.” A tribute to Mr H. L. Darton, who retired from the secretaryship, is also paid in the report. Mr Darton has been succeeded by Mr P. C. BroWne. The membership of the society is reported to be 1037, a decrease of four for the year. The financial statement shows that expenditure is £25 Os 7d more than revenue. This is said to be chiefly due to an increase of £IOO in the cost of the society’s publication. Assets exceed liabilities by £824 5s sd.
