SOCIALISING THE FARMERS
TO THE EDITOR OE THE PEESE. Sir, —Mr Jim Edwards has asserted that I belong to “the unthinking section oi the community”; that must be my misfortune. He, on the other hand, thinks automatically: no trouble at all to run off those wise phrases of his. I wonder who does the winding up? Is he synchronised with the Trades Hall, or running under his own power? He has no doubt fixed me all right, just like eating a banana; he has eaten the pith and thrown away the skin. Mr W. Mosdell is another gentleman who evidently accepts as the gospel truth anything which falls from the lips of those in authority, even when uttered with the obvious object of bolstering up doubtful policy. He commends to me the speech from the Governor-General. I have every respect for his Excellency, but wish to remind Mr Mosdell that he is the president of the Council, in other words the Cabinet, and his speech is delivered for and on behalf of that body; further, it did not contain any reference to the objective of his Government. i.e., socialisation, and that is the subject we have been discussing. Mr Mosdell thinks that it is essential for the economic salvation of the farmers that they should be socialised. Well, I doubt if 10 per cent, of them would vote in f vour of it. The Prime Minister said i -sterday “that he did not open his mouth and let the wind blow his tongue about,” but, judging by the statements made by him, one would be justified in assuming that that is just what does happen; and the tune we hear is determined 'by .the direction of the wind at the moment. — Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER.
