LAWN TENNIS AT WIMBLEDON
RESULTS IN SECOND ROUND NEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN IN SINGLES (tnnTBD rassa associ atiob—coetbiobt.) (Received June 23, 2 p.m.) LONDON, June 22. A full gallery at the centre court at Wimbledon to-day saw Mrs H.C. Hopman (Australia), test the strength of Mrs Helen Wills Moody (United States), which, it was generally assumed, was waning. The Australian kept the rallies going gamely, and easily matched the American’s driving, but she just lacked that purposefulness and finish which Mrs Wills Moody produced when in difficulties. Miss Helen Jacobs (United States) fainted when walking to the court to play Miss J. Ingram (Great Britain! and the match was postponed. C. G. Mako (United States), who beat C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, was slow to get going. His relative mildness of service enabled Malfroy to lead 5-2 and then 5-4. The New Zealander did much running to capture the set. Mako, in the second set, served more fiercely, forcing Malfroy to resort to lobbing, to which Mako was merciless. Malfroy’s best scoring strokes were drop shots, but the American s “legginess” and reach often neutralised this. Both were below form. Malfroy, in the fourth set, found that it paid to come into the net and volley, but there were long rallies in the glaring sun. In the fifth set Mako lasted better. Results:—
