OUTLET FROM LAKE FORSYTH
Flood Water Drained By Gut ROAD EXPECTED TO BE CLEAR TO-DAY A cut through the shingle bank to the sea to give an outlet for the flooded waters of Lake Forsyth was successfully made yesterday. The water was running so freely through the cut last evening that it was expected that the lake level would subside sufficiently by this morning to clear the road of flood water. Freshes in the creeks raised the lake yesterday, and the main highway was flooded at several places between Birdling’s Flat and Little River. The road should be clear for all traffic this morning unless the cut closes up through the action of the ocean tide. The cut was finished yesterday morning by the five teams of horses and scoops employed on the job for nearly a week by the Wairewa County Council. The water made a slow getaway through it at first; but the outflow improved considerably during the afternoon, and the expectations at nightfall were that the measure would be entirely successful in draining the surplus water from the lake.
