FEWER COWS UNDER TEST
DISEASE AND SHORTAGE OF LABOUR BLAMED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 21. A decrease in the number of cows under test in New Zealand during the last year was reported by Mr G. R. Herron, the president, at the annual conference of the Dominion Group Herd Testing Federation, which opened at New Plymouth to-day. He blamed the decrease to the difficulty of obtaining labour in cowsheds, which caused many herds to be withdrawn at the last minute, and to the incidence of disease. He emphasised the importance of the last problem and expressed pleasure at the steps which had been taken towards combating disease amongst dairy herds in New Zealand. The total number of cows charged for during the season, stated the report, was 245,178. compared with 252,185 an the previous season. In addition. there were 9569 association cows tested, which were not subject to ‘the levy. S' The retiring members of the management committee, Messrs G. R. Herron (Southland) and W. J. Law (Bay of Plenty) were re-elected unopposed. Mr Herron was re-elected president.
