CONCILIATION COUNCIL
METAL WORKERS* AWARD DISCUSSION IN COMMITTEE The hearing of an industrial dispute over the terms and conditions of employment of workers in the metal trade industries was considered in Conciliation Council yesterday morning. The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr S. Ritchie, presided, and 14 representatives of the industry were present. The discussion was held in committee.
The dispute, which covers engineers, moulders, boilermakers, rangemakers, nailmakers, and wireworkers throughout the Dominion, and metalworkers’ assistants in certain districts, was partly heard in Wellington on May 27, when 35 representatives from both sides were present. A partial agreement was then reached, and certain wage rates were tentatively fixed. Yesterday, the discussion ranged over the hours of work that applied to shiftworkers and the definition of the classes of, processworkers. A tentative agreement was reached, but it is expected that the council will continue in committee for at least three days.
