DISPOSAL OF PROFITS

REDUCED ELECTRICITY CHARGES NORTH CANTERBURY BOARD’S POLICY “Any profits made by the operations of the board should be appropriated thus: (1) By reducing the' cost of current to consumers, (2) by reducing the cost of service and connecting consumers, (3) by contribution to the reserve fund to be used in the interests of the board, or in any emergency.” This resolution was moved by Mr A. M. Carpenter at the monthly meeting of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board at Rangiora yesterday. The motion was seconded by Mr D. R. Hutchison. Mr Carpenter said it was only right in principle that those consumers who had guaranteed loans for the distribution of current should receive benefits from any profits made. There was nothing revolutionary in the proposal. It was only progressive, he said. The chairman (Mr A. Cowie) said that the policy of the board in the past had been to give profits back to the consumer by reducing the charges for current. The board did not aim to make any large profits, but merely to pay its way and provide adequate service for the consumers.

Mr Li. B.'Evans: Our profits are not exorbitant and we cannot afford to make any drastic reductions. The meeting decided to deal with the individual clauses of the resolution and clauses (1) and (3) were adopted. A sub-committee consisting of Mrs M. A. Ellen, Messrs A. M. Carpenter, and H. V. Murray, was appointed to consider any reductions that might be made in the present rates, particularly cooking rates, and to bring forward any recommendation at the next meeting of the board. 1
