HOPE GIBBONS SHIELD RACE PAPANUI CLUB WINS TWO EVENTS Papanui’s No. 1 team won the first of the 1938 series of races for the Hope Gibbons Shield, which was held by the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre on Sat* urday over a course of 23 miles, out-and-home from Papanul to Woodend. The winning team recorded an average time of 59mln 0 4-ssec. The .first race for the H. L. Grant Cup for Juniors, which was held over the same course, was also won •by a Papanul team in the time of 63min lessee. Considering the conditions under which the races were held the performance of each team was excellent. Almost all the way from Papanul to Woodend a cold, strong wind, increasing at times nearly to gale force, was encountered. On the return Journey, with the wind behind them, riders were touching 35 miles an hour frequently, and for a considerable distance the winning team attained an average speed of 30 miles an hour. T. Llndley, riding In Papanui’s No. 2 team, raced brilliantly. Each team was started at two-minute intervals, so that Llndley’s team had a start of two minutes on Papanui’s No. 1 team, which, however, caught up with the No. 2 team. Llndley then left his own group, and ‘ competing against the five riders of No. 1 team, drew ahead, covering the total distance in about 38min.

The performance of the Ranglora team, which was awarded - fourth place, covering the distance in 62min 42sec, was the more creditable since the team was held up at Belfast through one of its riders getting, a puncture. Each member of the Bangiora team raced ‘ well, covering the distance to Woodend almost < in exactly the same time as Technical’s No. 1 team, which had a six minutes' start. Technical’s No. 1 team nevertheless showed promise of developing into a splendid combination, each rider having a knowledge of how to conserve his energy through jockeying for position at given intervals. AVON AMATEUR CLUB’S RACE

BARKER FIRST AND FASTEST TIME Twenty-three riders contested the Avon Amateur Cycling Club’s 28J miles race on Saturday afternoon from Mairehau to Woodend and back. A head wind was encountered on the outward journey. The limit riders off 6£mln were overtaken by the Simin bunch in the first 10 miles, and the 2mln bunch had gathered In the 4imln men after passing Kalapol. At Woodend the race had resolved into four bunches three minutes apart, the leaders being G. Bartram, A. Pavieil, and J. H. Halliday. On the homeward journey and assisted by a following wind, the back Bunches were riding at 35 miles an hour. Barker, Vintiner, and Allen took the lead and fought out a great sprint for the line. Barker winning by half a length from Allen and gaining fastest time. Results:—H. Barker (2min), 76mln 46sec, 1; C. Allen (2min). 76tnln 48 l-ssec, 2; A. Pavieil (Simin), SOmln IB 2-ssec, 3; J. H. CASH ROAD RACING STARTS

FIFTEEN MILE RACE AT MAIREHAU

The Christchurch Cycling and Athletic Club opened the road racing season for cash cycling with a 15 miles road race at Mairehau on Saturday afternoon. A small field of 15 riders started, with R E. Slack and J. H. Newlove on scratch. They conceded a limit of 64min. The scratch men rode a-good race to finish only 35 seconds behind the winner. The race resulted as follows:—P. J Harrison (4imin). 44mln 22sec, 1; B. TT Evans (3min), 43min 6sec. 2; C. Wood (3min), 43mln 6 1-SseC. 3; L. H. Arnst (64min), 46min 36 2-ssec. 4; J. H. Newlove (scr), 40min 27sec, 5; R. E. Slack (scr). 41min 4sec, 6. Newlove made fastest time. The sprint was spoiled to a certain extent through the competitors 'running into a mob of cows, and the bunch was broken up. Harrison won easily.
