GERMANY GIVES WARNING
DR. GOEBBELS IN WEST PRUSSIA NATION’S PATIENCE NOT INEXHAUSTIBLE FURTHER MEASURES AGAINST JEWS (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 19, 11.30 p.m.) BERLIN, June 18. The Minister for Propaganda (Dr Goebbels) addressing district leaders in West Prussia, sounded another warning that the patience of Germany in the cause of peace was not inexhaustible.
Referring to the Sudeten Germans, he said a nation of 75,000,000 could not be provoked continually. He exhorted certain foreign circles not to'misuse the patience of Germany, Fresh anti-Semitic moves include an order that all Jewish shops must have their names painted on the windows in white letters. Traffic police have received lists of Jewish car-owners and car numbers accompanied by orders to arrest them at sight. ** The Gestapo (German Secret Police) is hourly rounding up dozens of Jews. It is estimated that nearly 1600 were arrested during the week. Their relatives have not been informed of the reason for the arrests or the fate of the victims.
The Jewish shops throughout the city are closing for fear of violence.
The Government insists that the arrests are purely directed against criminals, but despite every effort to whip up public resentment, the crowds watching the persecution appear sympathetic towards the Jews. The campaign is obviously offending public opinion. The Vienna correspondent of “The Times” states that Jewish persecution in Vienna is most bitter. Thousands wait all night outside the English and American Consulates for the purpose of registering for migration, which is usually impossible. There can be no Jewish family in the country without one or two members under arrest.
The Vienna correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” states that, manacled and in chains, Karl Lang, Austria’s public executioner, who officially strangled a number of condemned Nazis, was also executed. Seven hundred were sent to concentration camps in one day.
