Mr de Valera Heads Poll MANY RETURNS YET TO COME iDBITCD PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 19, 11.30 p.m.) DUBLIN, June 19. The state of parties after the counting of votes in the Eire election to-day is:— De Valera Party .. 32 Cosgrave Party .. .. 27 Labour Party .. • • 3 Independents .. .. 5 Those elected include Mr de Valera, who hfeaded the poll in Clare, obtaining 6459 votes in excess of the required quota, Mr Frank Aiken, Minister for Defence, Mr Oscar Traynor. Minister for Posts and Telegraphs,' Mr Sean McEntee, Minister for Finance, Mr Sean T. O’Kelly, Deputy-Premier, Mr James Ryan, Minister for Agriculture, Mr W. T. Cosgrave, and Mr Alfred Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin.
Those defeated include Mr James Larkin, the trade unionist, a sitting member. Thirty-one returns are yet to come. , , At the last general election in July. 1937, the state of the parties W Fianna Fail (De Valera) .. 69 Fine Gael (Cosgrave) .. 48 Labour •• • •
Independents .. . 8 The Parliamentary position until the recent dissolution was made the more interesting since the Speaker of the Bail (Mr Frank Fahy) was a supporter of Mr de Valera, and was only entitled to vote in the event of a tie. Mr de Valera, therefore, although his forces were exactly equal to those of the other parties, would on occasion find himself in a minority, of one.
