CONCERT AT RANGIORA

PRESBYTERIAN . SUNDAY SCHOOL FUNDS VARIED PROGRAMME GIVEN A concert by the pupils of Misses June Forgeson and G. Rogers, in aid of the Presbyterian Sunday school funds, was held in the John Knox Hall recently. The accompanist , was Mrs R Watson. Items were given as follows:*—Highland fling, Joan Watson; doll dance, Ivy Shepherd; Irish jig, Shirley Loffhagen; vocal duets, Hilary May, Marionette Yates, Alison Hlndle, and Naomi Jackson; song, Joan Watson; musical monologue, Pat Smith; part song and juvenile recitations. Edna Johnson, Pat Smith, Naomi Jackson. Audrey Loffhagen, and Alison Hindle; piano solos, Neroli Atkinson and Margaret Marshall.

The second half of the programme included a 20-minute entertainment entitled “A Dutch Holiday,” by the juvenile artists.

The weekly social of the Lincoln Basketball Club was held in the Public Hall. Mrs W. Jordan and Mr and Mrs J. Benny were the winners of the flag “500”. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr A. Davis nad partner and Mr C. Moody and Miss H, Birch.

THIRD ANNUAL BALL AT LINCOLN

The bachelors and spinsters of Lincoln held their third annual ball recently in the Public Hall. Mr W. S, Templeton and Miss N. L. Perymun were joint secretaries. The benedicts of the district were guests of honour and many visitors from neighbouring districts were present. Music was played by Mr J. Stewarts’ band. Among those present were Mr and Mrs G. S. PERSONAL NOTES KAIKOURA Mr and Mrs Andrew Stewart and family left Kaikoura this week to reside in the Bay of Plenty, where Mr Stewart haa been transferred, LITTLE RIVER Mr J. R. White, who has been seriously ill, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mrs W. Carston and her son, Mr R. Carston, who have been spending a holiday with relatives in Little River, have returned to their home in the King Country. North Island. Mrs L. Atkinson (Okain’s Bay) is visiting her parents. Mr and Mrs V. Pidgeon (Coach road. Little River).

LEESTON TOWN BOARD CLOSING OF A STREET Advice was received by the Leeston Town Board at its monthly meeting from the Canterbury Education Board that details of the proposal to close part of Pennington street, to link up school properties on either side, had been sent to the Education Department inf Wellington for approval. When this was received the proposal would be proceeded with.

It was decided to advise the Christchurch City Council that the board was agreeable to a renewal of the arrangement for the collection and distribution of heavy tralHc licence fees.

Consideration was given a proposal to purchase a motor-grader which the Ellesmere County Council intended to sell. It was decided to obtain a report oh the condition of the machine.

A petition signed by 63 members of women’s institutes was received, asking that a rest room for women visitors should be provided in Leeston. The petition was held over for consideration at a later meeting. Mr T. Bowis, who has been in the board’s service for 14 years as working overseer, attended the meeting, by invitation, and received a gift from members in appreciation of his services.

HEAVY FROSTS AT CULVERDEN

A frost of 17.75 degrees was registered In Culyerden on Thursday, and the highest frost this year, which was 19 degrees, yesterday; Both frosts were followed by sunny days. It is expected that even heavier frosts will follow, as the snow is very low down on the surrounding hills.
