TIMES HAVE CHANGED
The Square was Different in i the Day of the Horse
THE horse has almost gone from the streets of Christchurch. A photograph of a corner of the Square 50 years ago, compared with a modern photograph from the same vantage point, shows what great changes have come about with its disappearance. The early E holograph shows a multitude of orsemen, some waggonettes, a governess cart, and various other horse-drawn vehicles—even a horse
tram. Its modern counterpart shows cyclists, motor-cars, a diesel bus, and electric trams. Other changes are evident in the Somehow the old Square But The post office (built in 1877), the Government Life Insurance building, and a corner of the A.M.P. building are outstanding in the old photograph. Now they are only part of a mass of buildings.
