A FULL DAY FOR MR SAVAGE

NORTH ISLAND TOUR CONTINUED JOURNEY FROM STRATFORD TO DANNEVIRKE (TRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DANNEVIRKE. June 17. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M J, Savage! and the Hon. P. C. Webb, in continuation of their goodwill tour, arrived in Dannevirke shortly before 6, o’clock this evening, being cheered by a number who had gathered to them. ■Mr Savage had a busy day. Before leaving Stratford in the morning, he visited the High School and addressed the pupils. Later he visited Ka’ponga. Kapuni,' and Manaia, being accorded enthusiastic v/elccmes at each place. The gathering at Manaia. where the party was the guest ox the Town Board, was large and the welcome of the residents was mest enthusiastic. Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., accompanied the party. From Manaia, Mr Savage travelled to Ashhurst, via Palmerston North. He later went to Woodville, being accorded receptions at both places. Mr Savage, in reply to the Mayer of Woodville, said that during the tour he had been informed at some places that no Prime Minister had visited them for periods ranging from 32 to 55 years. This he thought a great mistake. because no man, whether Prime Minister or a Minister of the Crown, could claim that he fully knew his job unless he saw it.

The weather was perfect throughout the day, and Mr Savage, in conversation with a press representative, expressed pleasure at the aopearance of the whole countryside and the general conditions. 'So far during the trip be estimated that he had addressed 6000 adults and several thousand children.

He was tendered a complimentary dinner by the Pahiatua Labour Representation Committee. Sir Alfred Ransom, M.P., was among the guests. Later, a Mayoral reception was held at the Town Hall. It was a very largely attended gathering, at which Mr Savage crowned the winner of the queen carnival in the Pahiatua electorate to aid the party campaign fund. Mr G. A. Hansen, the Labour candidate for Pahiatua, was present.
