CLERKS’ UNION CONTROL

RESULT OF POSTAL BALLOT new executive will TAKE CHARGE The postal ballot conducted for the election of the executive of the Christchurch Clerks’, Cashiers’, and Office Workers’ Union has resulted in the election of all the five members whose names comprised one of the “tickets” placed before the union. Their election was assured by a substantial majority over the other “party.” The election created the greatest interest in the union, which is one of the biggest in Canterbury. The result of the ballot follows with the names of the candidates and tbe total of votes:— N. J. Anderson . - .. 622 T. E. Dawson .. .. 608 L. A. Lilly .. ..587 J. A. Stuart .. * .. 584 C. N. Thornton .. .. 570 (Elected.) L. K. Scott .. .. 327 H. M. Lamb .. .. 301 G. McKenzie .. ..294 V. M. Consedine ..i .. 263 H. R. Peers .. .. 251 Miss H. von Sierakowski 246 Miss N. Thurston .. 147 Mrs J. Souter .. .. 91 A. R. Wall .. .. 74 Informal . - .. 11 - The above returns were released yesterday by the secretary of the union, Mr T, Nuttall, who was the returning officer. He said that there had been almost a 5d per cent. poll. Successful Party’s Views The postal ballot followed a requisition made by 10 members of the union at the annual meeting. So much interest was taken in the election, with the issue of party tickets and manifestos, that it assumed the proportions of a small general election, particularly in view of the contrasting issues at stake. The victorious party is said to comprise the members whose manifesto was in favour of free political thought for members, in favour of reducing the subscription as soon as possible and opposed to affiliation with the Federation of Labour. It is claimed that the election will lead to sweeping changes in the administration of the affairs of the union.
