LESS WORK TO BE UNDERTAKEN

♦ SBLWYN COUNTY COUNCIL PROPOSAL NO ALTERATION IN RATES A recommendation from the finance committee that the same rates as last year be struck for the current financial year came before the Selwyn County Council at its monthly meeting. The acting-chairman (Cr. G. H. Grigg) gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that a general rate of 9-16 d in the £ and a hospital rate of 21-64 d in the £ be levied, to fall due on July 23. The finance committee reported that it had gone carefully into the estimates and it recommended that less work be undertaken than was the case last year. It was regretted that it would be necessary to defer reconstruction and metalling of some of the roads but heavy advances in the cost of labour and materials limited the amount of work that could be done with the funds available. The hospital levy had been increased to £1945 18s 3d this year. The members present at the meeting were Crs. J. J. Allan, E. A. Duncan, K. W. J. Hall. ,T. F. Hight. T. E. Pearson, W. Stone, and D. W. Westenra. The District Highways Council wrote advising that the deviation at the Selwyn School could be carried out as soon as the necessary transfers had been arranged. K was agreed to begin the work as soon as possible after Itha agreements had been signed,

A deputation from the Hororata-Mal-vern branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association waited on the council with a request that it take over control of the Glenroy war memorial. The application was favourably considered by councillors, but it was decided first to verify that the memorial was an “ap--1 proved” one in terms of section 199 of the Counties Act. It was agreed *o accept a renewal of the allocation of heavy traffic fees in the No. 14 district for a further i three years, provided other local bodies were prepared to do the same. It was decided to plant a reserve of 27 acres at Te Pirita with pinus insignis trees. The works committee reported on an inspection of the county early in June The highways were again in fair condition, but a large number of riding . roads wanted patching or metalling.
