TOBACCO GROWING IN DOMINION
GRANT TO DEPARTMENT FOR RESEARCH DECISIONS OF THE BOARD irassa association telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 16. The business at a recent meeting of the Tobacco Board at Wellington was reviewed by the Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) to-day. He said that, recognising the value of research to the Industry, the board had some time ago undertaken to make a grant of gd a pound to the Department of Scientific and Industrial, Research in respect of leaf.of the 1935-36 and 1936-37 seasons. The contribution for these two seasons would amount to between £I2OO and £I3OO. Recognising also the value of the continuity of a programme of research, the board decided to ask the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for an estimate of the amounts which the department would require from the board for research during the three seasons, 1937-38, 193839, and 1939-40. ‘The conduct of a soil survey of the tobacco lands and the potential tobacco lands in the Nelson district, the carrying out of an intensive programme work in relation to mosaic disease, and the establishment of a research station, which was now in hand, are some of the matters of vital importance to the industry with which the board has been concerned and in which it is assisting directly, both financially and otherwise, with a view to ensuring the maintenance of the quality of the leaf and the more effective control of production in relation to demand,” he said. It was decided by the board that manufacturers should be asked to include in their contracts for next season a stipulation that the quantity grown under combined contracts for local manufacture and for export should be ?, relation to kiln capacity.
