LARGE AMOUNT RAISED

QUEEN CARNIVAL AT ELLESMERE BRASS BAND FUNDS WILL BENEFIT The gross takings from a queen carnival and bazaar, held to assist the Ellesmere Brass Band, were about £530. The net result will not be known until after the queen crownins ceremony at the end of this month. All parts of the district co-operated in the effort, there being four candidates in the carnival. The winner was Miss Mary Lambi'e, the LakesideSedgemere representative. HEAVY FALLS OF RAIN FIGURES FOR ELLESMERE DISTRICT Up to Tuesday the rainfall figures in various parts of the Ellesmere district were as follows: Mr A. McLaughlin (Taumutu), 2.66 in; Mr A. J. Inwood (Southbridge), 3.49 in; Mr J. Moorhead (Southbridge), 4.22 in: Mr R. G. Bishop (Southbridge), 4.55 in; Mr J. Boag (Brookside). 3.28 in; Mr A. W. Hurford (Doyleston). 3.75 in: Meadowbank Orwell), 3.95 in; Oakleigh Estate (Southbridge), 4.04 in. OBITUARY MR R. MONTGOMERY A respected resident of Southbridge Mr R. Montgomery, died recently at the home of his son-in-law. Mr R. Hampton. Born in Tangradee, County Armagh Ireland, in 1856, Mr Montgomery came to New Zealand in the Hydaspes about 60 years ago. He owned and farmed the property known as McLean’s Island, in the Waimakariri river district for many years, and later retired to Styx In 1923 Mr Montgomery made a trip to Ireland, and on his r.eturn settled at Southbridge with his daughter and son-in-law. Mr Montgomery is survived by two daughters, Mrs Hanrahan (Napier) and Mrs R. Hampton, and three sons. Messrs G. and R. Montgomery (Papanui). and R. Montgomery (Southbridge). One son died in 1918 from injuries in the Great War. Mrs Montgomery died in 1915. There was a large attendance at the funeral, the interment taking place at the Papanui Anglican cemetery The service was taken by the Rev. E A. Osmers. and the bearers were Messrs H. Preston, J. Munro. J. Allen, and W. Clarke, all of Papanui. Many floral tributes were received. MRS F. M. STEVENSON The death occurred in St. George's Hospital, after a short illness, of Mrs Flora Margaret Stevenson. Mrs Stevenson was born in Christchurch in 1901, being the elder daughter of Mrs McAdam and the late Mr John McAdam, “Glenturrett,” Domett. She married Mr James Stevenson, “Ben Cruachan,” second son of Mr and Mrs T. Stevenson. “Fenwick Farm,’’ Spolswood. Mrs Stevenson took a great interest in the welfare of the district. She is survived by her husband and her son. The funeral took place at the Home View cemetery, there being a large gathering of friends and relatives from the Cheviot and surrounding counties. A short service was held at “Glenturrett,” and the service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr Paton and the Rev. Mr Leishman. The bearers were Messrs Gilbert and Robert McAdam (brothers). Boyd and Thomas Stevenson, Neil and Gerald Crampton. The chief mourners were Mr James Stevenson and lan Stevenson, Mrs J. McAdam, Miss Rosa McAdam, Messrs Gilbert and Robert McAdam. Mr and Mrs T. Stevenson, Messrs Robert and James McAdam, Boyd, Thomas, and Rex Stevenson. Miss Jean Stevenson, Mr and Mrs W. R. Crampton. Many floral tributes were sent. SATISFACTORY BALANCE SHOWN DOMAIN BOARD AT SHEFFIELD The annual meeting pf the Sheffield Domain Board was held recently, with the chairman (Mr F. J. Jenkins) presiding. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31. 1938, showed a credit balance of £29 2s Bd, which was considered satisfactory. The chairman reported that during the last year 52 cords of firewood were cut and sold. The felled area had been fenced and replanted. Mr Jenkins was re-elected chairman. LODGE SOCIAL AT SHEFFIELD The Loyal Malvern Lodge social committee held a , card evening recently in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Sheffield. Prizes were won as follows:—Women: Miss Irene Humm 1. Miss Mildred Humm 2. Consolation, Mrs J. Curtis. Men: Mr P. F. Roper 1, Mr Leonard Roper 2. Consolation, Mr Alan Roper. SOCIAL AT WEST MELTON A social in aid of the West Melton District Horticultural Society and the West Melton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the hall recently. Competitions were won as follows: — Men: Mr S. Coleman 1, Mr S. Walker 2. Women: Mrs Ellingforth 1, Mrs Wilson 2.

For dancing, music was played by Mrs W. Hayes. Mr L. Fronting was master of ceremonies.

EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE AT TORMORE

The Tormore School Committee held a euchre party and dance recently, in ai£ of the school funds. There was a good attendance. The women’s prize a't cards was won bv Mrs C. Rich, and the men’s by Mr J. Towne.

Before the departure of Mr W. Montgomery on transfer to Palmerston North, the staff of the Eyrewell State forestry service presented him with a rug and pipe.
