EARLY MORNING FIRE
CITY SPORTS GOODS SHOP THREATENED An outbreak of fire in the premises of Cromb and Merritt, sports goods dealers, of Cashel street, shortly after ope o’clock this morning was noticed in its early stages and was under control by the City Fire Brigade before a great deal of damage was done. The fire was in the upper floor of the two storey premises, in a small workroom and storeroom. It was confined to this area by the brigade, and the front part of the floor, used mainly for golf driving practice, was not damaged by the fire.
A large amount of sports goods was stored in the shop below. The brigade protected this from damage by water dripping through the ceiling by collecting the goods in pile* and cover* ing them with waterproox sheets. Three engines from the brigade answered the call, which was given fay telephone. A lead was taken from the main in Cashel street, and the hose was taken to the heart of the outbreak through a side door in a right-of-way and up the stairs. The room above was fairly densely filled with smoke, and a stream of smoke poured out of a front window into Cashel street. Hurricane lamps were used by the firemen in their work upstairs. The fire smouldered steadily for a time, and in one part spread toward the ceiling. The full extent of the damage was not known early this morning.
