DOG TRIALS

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT W AIM ATE FURTHER EVENTS DECIDED [THE PRESS Special Service.] W AIM ATE, June 15. Conditions were better to-day for the continuation of the Canterbury Collie Dog Club’s open chamnlonshlp trials, which are being held in conjunction with the Waimate Collie Dog Club’s jubilee meeting on Mr E. C. Studholme’s property, Waimate. On the first two days there were several heavy showers of rain, but to-day the weather was ideal, although the ground was still very sodden. The Waimate open and maiden heading, pull, and yarding was continued to-day and the Canterbury championship of that event was decided. The open event was won by M. A. Matheson’s Scott, 571 points, with R. A. Wilson s Jott, 54 points, second. M. R. Macaulay’s Tweed the Third, with 53 points, was third. Only two of the six dogs were in the run-off for the championship. Matheson’s Scott and W. Ross’s Toby put the sheep in the pen, and Ross’s Toby was the only dog which scored more points than it did In the open event. Matheson’s Scott made two exceptionally good runs and won the championship with an aggregate of IX4I points. Highest points in the championship run were scored by Ross’s Toby, with 58. This dog went from sixth place in the open event with 471 points to second in the championship with 1051 points. The Waimate maiden event was won by R. A. Gibson’s Jott, 54 points, with W. R. Macaulay's Tweed the Third,. 53 points, second. A. L. Aubrey’s Star, 48 points, was third. He made a fair lift and pulled on a good line. His work at the yards was very good, and he completed well within the time. Ross’s Toby cast to the right and ran out freely, keeping a good line. He made a good head, lifted well, and pulled on a good line. He did good work at the yards to finish well within the time. Macaulay’s Tweed the Third cast to the right, and ran out well In a good line to make a fair head. He pulled fairly well on a good line. His work at the yards was fair, but he failed to yard. Anderson’s Toby Junior cast to the right, going out freely to make a good head. He pulled on a fair line, but was inclined to be jerky. He did fair work at the yards but failed to yard. Gibson’s Jott cast to the left, going out well, but coming in before heading. He made a very close head and a fair pull. His work at the yards was only fair and he failed to complete. The judge (Mr J. Davidson, of Pleasant Point) said that the work on the whole was very fair. The dog placed first made two particularly good runs. The best run in the championship event was by ’ Ross’s Toby. , The trials were scheduled for . three days but it has been found impossible to complete them in time. The open championship and the maiden huntaway with slew started to-day and will be continued to-morrow.
