BASKETBALL

HARD COURTS SECURED SENIOR GAMES AT CHRISTCHURCH EAST [By SHOOT. 3 Beginning next Saturday, all senior and second grade matches, and one other match from a lower grade, will be played on hard courts at the Christchurch East School in Gloucester street. For some time, the Canterbury Basketball Association has been endeavouring to make satisfactory arrangements for playing at least senior games on hard courts, but now that four excellent courts are available at the Christchurch East School, 16 teams will be able to compete there each Saturday. The seven matches in the senior and second grades will always be played on the hard courts, and the odd match will be chosen from any of the third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, or sixth grade teams, which have no members in the representative teams, as the representatives would be needed for practice at South Hagley Park. All senior and second grade representatives will be held at the East courts on Saturdays and will give the Canterbury team an excellent opportunity of speeding up its comparatively slow game. The evening practices will be held as usual at Riccarton on the Ayr street court, where the lighting has been improved considerably. Representative Trials A senior team and a second team will be chosen from the following players, who are asked to attend a practice after the club matches on Saturday at Christchurch East: — Forwards—O. Wheatley (Technical), R. McKendry (Digby’s), C. Swan (Digby’s), E. Matthews (Technical), R. Cursons (Awatea), E. Perrin (Ngaio), N. Mahoney (Sacred Heart), Jean and Joan Felton (St. Mary’s), J. Fitch (University), J. Ardagh (Training College), J. Simpson (Mairehau), Gregory (Kaiapoi), and E. Turner (Digby’s). _ Centres—V. Flood and G. Winter (Digby’s), M. Scott (St. Mary’s), H. Dalziel (Training College), G. Irving (St. Mary’s), S. Roscoe (University), P, Taylor (Technical), E. Sherratt and J. Mahoney (Sacred Heart), and D. Judd (Mairehau). Defence —J. Millard (St. Mary’s), K. Palmer (Digby’s), M. Fancy (Technical), M. Bradley (St. Mary’s), M. Clark (Digby’s), C, Stephens (University), M. Phillips (Awatea), O. Felton (St. Mary’s), E. King (Training College), N. Dick (Ngaio), P. Judd (Mairehau), and M. Armstrong (Digby’s). Additions may yet be made to the 1: and from the complete list a senior team of 12 players will be selected to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand tournament at Timaru in August, ant. a second team of 10 players will be chosen to compete against Ashburton’s senior team. The match will be played at Christchurch, probably during August. Third grade trials will take place at South Hagley Park on court 3 at 3.30 p.m. The following are included:— M. Hobbs, E. McLaughlan, N. Robinson, E. Johns, I. Haughey, J. Travis, R. Murphy, D. O’Connor, D. Griffiths, P. O’Leary, I. Smith, B. Maxwell, H. Watson, Qnaid, J. Erickson. A. Bennett, J. Bruce, E. Smith, N. McKeever, E. McPherson, L. Staples. A. Edwards, D. Summers, M. Phillips, B. Cullen, M Williams, D. Armstrong, G. Pring. J. Blain, and J. Davey. All fourth grade players selected for trials are to attend a practice at South Hagley Park on court 12 at 3.30 pun., and all C grade representatives of last year are to practise at South Hagley Park on court 8 at 3.30 p.m. Senior Matches Court conditions were anything but conducive to steady play last Saturday, yet some high scores were mounted, especially in the matches concerning Digby’s and St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s defeated Awatea by 34 goals to 11, “while Digby’s, scoring 35 goals, did not allow Ngaio’s total to pass 5. Both winning teams exhibited skilful handling and clever passing movements. " St. Mary’s found little opposition in Awatea, and once the ball was in the hands of the St. Mary’s forwards, another goal was added to the score.

For the most part, Digby’s field work was much too last for the Ngaio players. Many of the goals were shot almost immediately after the throw-off and when the blues were on the’de-

fence the ball rarely got past the centre. N. Dick played strongly in Ngaio’s defence, but up against such players as R. McKendry and C. Swan —an excellent combination—her task was too difficult. The three Digby’s forwards were at the top of their form, their strategic play being no less prominent than their shooting. C. Swan was brilliant, her shooting amazing in its unfailing accuracy. The match between University and Training College was very pleasant to watch. A clean, open game, it was fast and totally lacking in personal contact. Senior Referees There has been some feeling lately among players concerning the inefficiency of some of the referees who are assigned senior matches. And it is obvious that when a senior referee, even though possessed of an A grade pass, will repeatedly allow a player to bounce a ball three and four times and overlooks a pass from a player in a sitting position—two of the most glaring mistakes in basketball —that the players have some cause for complaint. Then, too, there are some referees who either cannot or do not bother to keep up with the ball and are content to stroll along the sideline and trust that the players’ knowledge of the rules will suffice. This encourages the players to get away with all the infringements they can and so good clean play disappears from the game. ....... A reshuffling of referees is definitely needed in the first two grades, and the suggestion that matches at Christchurch East courts be assigned to the same select few each Saturday is certainly a sound one. Name-Sheets for Matches Players are reminded that beginning on Saturday, June 18, name-sheets must be bought at the pavilion at the cost of 9d, or matches will be forfeited; also that the name-sheets must be secured and the names filled in before the matches are due to start as the games will not be delayed. Beau Ideal Cup Progress in the goal-shooting competition is as follows: —

There will be a meeting of referees in the Horticultural Society’s rooms, Manchester street, on Thursday, June 23, at 7.30 p.m. DRAW FOR SATURDAY REPRESENTATIVE TRIALS
