Horses in Road Mishap Clubman and Alby suffered injuries when the float in which they were being towed behind tfaeir trainer’s car from the Dunedin meeting broke away and capsized against a bank. Clubman had a tendon severed, and it will be some time before he is likely to be seen again in public. Alby suffered bruises and abrasions. At Ashburton

Hurdlers for West Coast Gasmask, Conception, Chaste, and/ Contract, four Riccarton horses in the Brush Hurdle Race at Greymouth on Saturday, were schooled together aver’ two brush hurdles yesterday, and all acquitted themselves well. A. Leach will ride Gasmask, J. McCauley Conception, G. Linton Chaste, and J. Bromby Contract. - Haulbowline and Guilder, both racr ing in the colours of J. B. Pearson, will be bracketed in Saturday’s hurdle event at Greymouth. A rider has not yet been secured for the former. The stable horseman, M. Reilly, wfH have the mount on Guilder, whose ' first effort over hurdles, following £ood track essays, will be awaited with much interest. Sir Rosenor has also had some schooling since coming to Riccarton. He is a speedy jumper, and with an advantage over his opponents in the matter of experience, he should make a bold showing on Saturday. He will be ridden by J. Murfitt. Two Holidays H. Wiggins, who was suspended for two months last week, had previously arranged to leave for America after the Great Northern meeting, and he will be away probably 12 months. Jumping Strain Skerry vore, the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, comes from a branch of the famous No. 14 family founded by the King Tom mare. Mermaid. He is by Cockpit from Sinella, by Cynic—Te Puia, by San Frau —Black . Ella. Te . Puia was the dam of the Great Northern Hurdles winner Kohu.

By Hunting Song Mendelssohn, whose form at Napier and Hastings suggests he is on the upgrade, is a three-year-old brother to Penny comequick (Hunting Song—Autumnina, by Autumn—Sabine, by Gonzeley). Another Hunting Song gelding from, the Gisborne district who looks useful is Gold Ballad. His family has been well in the limelight during recent years, his dam. Cherry Girl, being by Swift Flight from Cherry Roe. Cherry Roe is a half-sister to Merry Roe, a first-class mare in her day, and dam of Merry Damon. Merry Peel, Merry Mint, Merry Hunter, and Joviality. May Be Available

It will be unfortunate if Royal Banquet’s trouble proves serious, as the ranks of steeplechasers are already alarmingly thin. He has had a tendency to unsoundness, but looked betvi ter this winter, and it seemed after: the race at Hastings that his trouble was due to his heavy fall. He sweated very freely for a long time, and also gave other signs of distress. However, horses often make speedy recoveries, and he may still be available for better class events ahead. Career Ended

W. Rennie, one-time leading hurdle horseman, who broke his neck when Modern Maid crashed .at the first hurdle at EJlerslie on Boxing Day--1936, has received a letter from the Racing Conference advising him that, acting on medical advice, the .conference has decided that it is impossible for him again to earn his living by riding horses, and suggesting that he should try to obtain a job as a liftman. Rennie was apprenticed-to R. Hannon. the Cambridge owner-traiher, and was associated with that stable throughout his riding career, which lasted close on 20 years. It was also a Hannon-trained horse that brought about his mishap, for Modem Maid was in the stable at that time. Rennie had his first winning ride in a hurdle race during the Christmas meeting at Ellerslie, in 1919 on Rekanui. Rennie rode three winners of the Great Northern Hurdle Race, Wedding March, in 1927. Prince Lu. in 1931, and Landmark, in 1932. He was successful on only one horse in the Steepler chase, Billy Boy, in 1936, J

GREYMOUTH J.C.

Probable Visitors to Australia Included in the entries made in Christchurch for Australian spring events are Cerne Abbas, Royal Chief, Willie Win, and Dictate. From Washdyke, Queen of Song Top Row, Dunstan. Newsreel, Neatherlea, and the rising two-year-old Aranui by Colossus from Cupid’s Mark have been nominated.

Leading Horsemen Although L. J. Ellis is assured of again heading the list of winning horsemen for the season, he has failed to improve his position in the last month. Up to last week-end’s racing he was. with his 80 wins, well in advance of C. G. Goulsbrp, who, even if he' is unable to ride again this season, is sure to retain second position. B. H. Morris, in spite of his weight difficulty, is in third place, and likely to remain there, but for the next position W. Broughton and S. Wilson will have a close tussle. , The leading positions ‘ are as follows;—L. J. Ellis 80, C. Goulsbro 69, B. H. Morris 54. W. Broughton 48, S. Wilson 47, R, McTavish 37, H. Wiggins 37, G. Murfitt 6, and G. Humphries 6.

TROTTING NOTES A Reminder ' Acceptances for the light harness events on the Ashburton County Racing Club’s programme will close next Tuesday at 8 p.m. Addition to Team J. Seibel has taken in hand a two-vear-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Lady Brent, the dam of Subsidy. The novice is not far advanced to this stage, but he is shaping well. On Easy List

Coquette and Graham Direct, two members of F. G. Holmes’s team, have been placed on the easy list, but it is unlikely that either will remain out of work for long. The former, a two-year-old, has proved herself an attractive pacer, both with and without hopples, and she requires only time to develop into a useful winner.

Likely Improver Silk King, who has been nominated among the maidens in the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap on the Ashburton County Racing Club’s programme, is a gelding by Silk Thread from Glimpse, the dam of an outstanding performer in Royal Silk. He has been in work over a fair period, and he has raced several times without showing to advantage, but he has the ability to go fast, and he is a likely improver.

Disappointing Earlier in the season Anna Wong appeared likely to prove a useful mare among the improvers, but she has failed to race as well as expected, and she is still listed among the maiden performers. Recently she was put back in work again, this time under A. Cranston at Addington, and it is hoped that she will display improved form for a long spell from the tracks. Improved! by Spell After his early good displays, when he gave indications of being a pacer’ of more than average class. Rare Rey did not train on as well as had been expected, and it was decided to give him a long spell from racing. However, he was recently taken in hand again by L. O. Thomas, and he appears to have derived a good deal • of benefit from the course adopted with him. He is in fine order to start serious work, and it should not be long before he is in racing condition. Enjoying a Cbapge Several members of J. Fraser’s team are being treated to short spells •at the moment, but Indianapolis, Golden Eagle, Bittersweet, Rongomai, Grand Mogul, and Great Admiral are all being kept in trim by a course of road work, seldom being on the tracks. With the exception of Rongomai, who has returned to work after a spell, the others have all engaged in recent racing, and are in good order. However, with August racing in sight, it was not considered wise to let them lose their present condition, and they will be ready to do useful tasks again when the tracks are better suited to fast work.
