♦— - WESTPORT BODIES CONFER TELEGRAMS SENT TO MR SAVAGE (fSESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.I WESTPORT, June 3. The decision of the Government to establish the steel works at Onekaka and not at Westport came as a surprise to the community in the Buller district. After a conference of the heads of local bodies, the - Mayor of Westport (Mr J. Kilkenny) telegraphed the Prime Minister ‘the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) as follows: “Regret Westport not chosen as site for steel works, and realise • experts’-opinion is foundation of Government’s decision. Hope Westport coal will be used. Have pleasure in wishing you every success in great undertaking.” Mr D. J. Archer, chairman-'of the Buller County ■ Council, sent the following telegram: "Regret sudden decision of Minister for Industries in finding, site of steel works. Government depends on its expert advisers for guidance in these matters. If your Government is satisfied with opinion of those experts, we sincerely trust that site of works will not mar ultimate success*of project, and the belief is generally entertained that strong body of iron ore will be found in close proximity to Westport.”
