LOW SCORES AT BRISTOL

— * AUSTRALIANS OUT FOR 164 SINFIELD TAKES EIGHT FOR 65 GLOUCESTER BATSMEN FAIL IN SECOND INNINGS (XTHTTED PBBSS ASSOCIATION—rCOPTBIOHT-J (Received June 4, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 3. At lunch in the match between Australia and Gloucester, at Bristol, Australia had been dismissed for 164 in its first innings. Gloucester, which made 78 in the first innings, had eight wickets down for 96 in its second strike. The weather was sunny when play began. O’Reilly and Ward were dismissed by successive balls from Sinfield, and Tyler finished off the Australians. Sinfield was applauded for his outstanding bowling performance. Gloucester reopened at 11.55 a.m: on a tricky wicket. Wickets fell rapidly. Allen again was the only batsman not scored by the spin bowlers. iHe had a life at six and hung on until at 42 he skied O'Reilly. The catch was taken by McCabe at forward square-leg. Yesterday’s Play In Gloucester’s first innings yesterday, Allen batted brightly, but was troubled by the spinners and was nearly an hour making 15. Gloucester’s score at lunch was two for 61, but on.the resumption the wicket became difficult and O’Reilly reaped a harvest. He took five wickets for three runs off four overs after lunch. Eight Gloucester wickets fell in half an hour for the addition of 17. The batsmen were so nervous that they scarcely attempted a stroke. The wicket could not fully account for the pitiful display. Australia opened at 2.55. The batting of Brown and Badcock was dull, but Gloucestershire had nobody to exploit the vice in the wicket. After a correct and restrained hour, Brown was caught at fine leg. McCabe was beaten in playing a purely defensive stroke. Badcock and Hassett played defensively and awaited loose balls to score from. After their dismissal wickets fell quickly, but Ward stonewalled, while O’Reill'"’ hit gallantly until stumps. , Sinfield, a slow bowler, was very accurate and worried all the batsmen, who were unable to penetrate his leg-side field. In the match, England v. The Rest, at Lord’s, England carried its first innings score to 320 for seven wickets at lunch. The Rest, in its first innings, made 298. The weather was fine and the wicket drying. Hammpnd, playing most cautiously i completed his 1000 runs. Newspaper critics are surprised at The Rest’s good score against England. They do not think The Rest should have scored so well, indicating that the. English attack is not good enough against Australia. Although Edrich and Hutton put on 113 for England’s first wicket, their batting was painfully slow.
