Letters to The Editor
Correspondents who do not compljl with our rules set out in the last column of our Leader Page will excuse us from noticing their letters. Old King Sol.—"The Press”- total is arrived at by summing daily readings made in the office. The observatory total is made at the end of the month by independent readings ’ from the same chart-records. These, though produced by a modern instrument, cannot be read with absolute certainty. The margin of different:-; which it may permit between the readings of the most careful observers is sufficient, over a month, to account for a quite considerable discrepancy. Fair Go.—The firm you mention states that it charges the minimum fare of one shilling for distances up to half a mile, and sixpence for every half-mile after.. Bealey avenue to the square is more than half a mile. Fare is paid only for distance covered while the hirer is a passenger, except in areas outside the tramway area. Truth is on the March.—Only the initiator's right of reply remains open. White Lines.—When your letter was referred to Mr Bruorton, chief traffic inspector. he said the traffic department would look into the matter.
