SEAMEN WHO DESERT
CASES SAID TO BE INCREASING (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 2. “These cases are becoming increasingly numerous and increasingly difficult. The number of seamen who are deserting from overseas ships is very great,” said Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. “If the Courts are going to enforce the law the only way to deal with them is by imprisonment. Thus a person starting life in the Dominion starts with a sentence of imprisonment. “The proper course which was adopted by the Courts for many years when the Courts had power was to order the deserting seaman to return to his ship or to the country from which he sailed on articles.” The Magistrate convicted and imposed a fine on one deserter.
