At the top bend Halcyon Gift was out in front by two lengths, followed by Chatsworth, Pasch. and Scottish Union. The lead of four lengths which Halcyon Gift held at three-quarters of a mile, was reduced to two lengths at Tattenham Corner, where Cave Man and Mirza II were coming up rapidly. Scottish Union led into the straight, with Pasch challenging. Scottish Union looked a certainty till Bois Roussel put in an overwhelming run from the back and won. going away, by four lengths, while Scottish Union beat Pasch by two lengths. The success of Bois Roussel would no doubt cqme as a big surprise at Epsom, as he was not mentioned at all in pre-race discussions, and his name does not l appear in-the- -.list- -of eight leading two-year-olds in France last season. Vatout, his sire, was sired in 1926 and died last season. He is by Prince Chimay, and was fifth in the list of winning sires in France in 1937. As a three-year-old Vatout ran second in the Cambridgeshire Handicap in England. Plucky Liege, dam of, Bois Roussel, made turf history by producing Sir Galahad 111, who proved himself a great racehorse both in France and England. The Derby winner was nominated for the race in the name of Leon Volterra, but his present owner is the Hon. P. Beatty, who evidently purchased him in recent months. Scottish Union, second in Wednesday’s race, was purchased as a yearling for 3000 guineas. He started three times as a two-year-old, and after finishing second in his first effort, he won the Rous Memorial Stakes at Goodwood, and in a sensational manner beat Mirza II in the Middle Park Stakes. He earned £4417 by his two victories. Scottish Union belongs to the No. 19 family, and last year was regarded as one of the best of Cameronian’s offspring. His dam. Trustful, who won four races, is by Bachelor’s Double. At Doncaster last year, Mr J. V. Rank, owner of Scottish Union, bought his half-sister by Fairway, for 3600 guineas Pasch did not race as a two-year-old, but as the result of his two wins in two starts this season, which included a convincing victory in the recent Two Thousand Guineas. This success made him one of the shortest-priced favourites for the Derby in recent years. He was ridden by G. Richards, who has three placed performances in the classic, but has not yet been able to steer a winner. AUCKLAND SCRATCHINGS (PRESS association telegram.) AUCKLAND, June 2. Red Fox and Tradesman were scratched for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at 3.10 p.m. to-day.
