glsterlng only two goals against Addington's four unconverted tries. On Saturday Sydenham and Linwood had an even match at Monica Park, with some bright movements. The score stood at 11-all late in the second half, a clever break giving Sydenham another try, to snatch a good win. Hornby and Walmairl, at Sydenham, played rather dully, Waimalri having little attack. Hornby’s backs had some smart bouts against solid tackling and scored three tries, Waimairi not registering. . . The positions of the teams are as fol-

ADDINGTON (12) v. RAKAIA (4) At Monica Park yesterday a crowd of approximately 2000 watched the game between Addington and Rakaia. The weather was perfect and the ground in 'good order for a spectacular game, but solid tackling and sound defence were the order of the day. Reg Ward gave' Addington plenty of the ball with his hooking. Young often getting a flying start. But even this advantage was of no avail against the rock-like defence of the country team. Addington was not called on to defend as stoutly as its opponents, and this no doubt was responsible for the team finishing the better. The tall Rakaia forward, Barnard, was the best on the ground, but Briggs, E. Barbarel, and Price for the winners were deadly in the loose rushes. In the backs Young was the Ideal leader for the winners, while Geddes also showed Up. For Rakaia Horgan and J. O'Connor stood out, the former putting iln some brilliant individual runs. In the first spell there was some willing play among the forwards, and again atthe opening of the second spell, but the referee Issued a general warning and thereafter the game, though hard, was cleanly fought. The following were the teams; — Addington—W. Bonnlface; R. Barbarel, A. Geddes, E. Spurr, D. Wilson, L. Young: J. Hall; R. Price, Reg. Ward, B. Fraser, Hay Ward; G. Briggs, E. A. Barbarel. Rakaia—A. Grey goose; A. Horgan, J. Sloane, R. Buchanan, C. Greygoose, J. O’Connor: L. Sloane; R. Barnard. J. Walsh, R. Behrns, L. Hansen, C. O’Connor, W. Barnes. Addington kicked g>ff. and the opening exchanges were even until Buchanan picked up In midfield and shot through, but hlsi pass went astray. Rakaia was having slightly the better of the game. Addington was penalised and Horgan kicked a good goal. Addington looked dangerous when E. Barbarel broke away, but Horgan sent play back with a well-judged kick. However. Addington kept pegging away in the Rakaia twenty-five, but the Rakaia defence held. Buchanan then relieved the country team with a good run, but no one went with him. Horgan thrilled the crowd with a fast run,' being brought down within inches of the line. Horgan potted a neat goal soon after. The Addington forwards went right through and Briggs took a pass from E. Barbarel to go over. Young failed with the kick. At this stage Briggs went off Injured, and half-time came with the score:— Rakaia 4, Addington 3. Even play marked the opening of the second half, and If anything the game was becoming too willing. Young then passed out and the ball went right across to R. Barbarel, who scored at the corner. Bonnlface failed with the kick. The game was being played at a rattling pace and the tackling was solid. Addington was having slightly the better of the play territorially, but there was not much In it. Then from a scrum close in the ball went to E. Barbarel. who shot over at the corner. Bonnlface missed with the kick. Soon after Geddes made a brilliant opening before sending on to R. Barbarel. who went over wide out, Bonnlface again failed with the kick. Addington was now definitely on top and attacking hotly as the final whistle sounded with the score; Addington 12, Rakaia 4. - Referee; Mr H. Lawrence. HORNBY (11) v. WAIMAIRI (0) There was very little to enthuse over In the meeting of Waimairi and Hornby at Sydenham Park. The defence of both sides Was stronger than the attack, and the forwards had more than their share of the general play. It was seldom that the back chains were seen In full action. Heavy—not always good—tackling and the chill wind spoiled most of the runs before they were properly started. Hornby’s backs did try repeatedly to open up the play, but could not get • away fast enough to escape the Waimairi tacklers. Walmalri’s backs were not a good attacking unit, showing little combination and an Inclination to kick far too much. Taylor, Timms, and Bannan were the best of Hornby’s backs,' and Downs was the best for Waimairi. Honours were fairly even in a good contest between two clever half-backs, Bouterey being slightly the cleverer, and Caesar the better worker. Among the forwards, who had- a hard day’s work, Sneddon and Clark stood out for Waimairi, and Vivian, Lloyd, and Joiner for-Hornby. The teams were as follows: Waimairi—D. Smith: G. Kirk, J. Kirwan, R. Kett; E. McCann, J. Downs; N. Bouterey; F. Lang, E. Tavendale, T. Rossitter, W. Warren, .1. Clark, L. Sneddon. Hornbv—R. Edbrook: K. Bannan. R. Timms, E. Garrett: C. Taylor. W. Dunn; K, Caesaf; J. Lloyd. J. Airey, W. Vivian, G. Brown. W. Joiner. H, Standeven. With the wind, Waimairi pushed Hornby back and came near to scoring in the first few minutes. Hornby gradually won back to the centre and then started a series of raids on the Waimairi line, the defence holding till Timms rushed an opening and made a lot of ground. When in trouble he sent to Garrett, to Taylor, who went no very fast on the outside to take a good pass and cross fairly wide out. The kick failed. Hornby 3. Waimairi Hornby was mostly on top near the end of the snell. and Caesar started cleverly from a loose rush. He sent on to Taylor after making ground, and Timms, who received next, beat the defence badly With a very neat cut-in and scored. Dunn converted, making the Interval score: Hornby 8, Waimairi 0. After a dull spell on resuming. Waimairi livened up and gave Hornby some hard defensive work. When Hornby came back a centring kick had Smith in trouble

and he only partly cleared. Lang was there to help Smith, but was also not successful and Barman, when he received, went for the comer like a rocket, just reaching there. Dunn missed. Bannan and Joiner went close to another try near the end. which rang with the scores: Hornby 11, Waimalrl 0. Referee: Mr P. Cotton. SYDENHAM (16) v. LINWOOD (U) Sydenham, on its display in the second spell, deserved to beat Unwood. but the game was very even indeed. Roach, the Llnwood full-back, gave a magnificent exhibition, while F. Stevens, right wing, showed speed and cleverness. H. Stevens and Lawrence were the best of the forwards. . _ Of the Sydenham backs. Guy and Rothwell were outstanding, while Grimes and E. Hamberger showed their usual good form in the pack. The two sets of forwards were even. Llnwood hooking 33 times to Sydenham’s 42. but the Llnwood backs showed superior speed. Sydenham won by persistence. The teams were:— _ _ Sydenham—L. Blackler; T. Duke. h>. Rothwell, N. Hamberger: W. Guy, H. Davis: B. McKenzie; E. Grimes, E. Hamberger. C. Wilder, C. Davis. F. Jones, J. Denvlr. Llnwood —T. Roach; F. Stevens. D. Carey, R. Whjtley; C. Priest. L. Beri; J. James: J. Jones. H. Stevens. R. Moir, A. Lawrence. F. Chick, J. Stewart. Although Sydenham set a fast pace for the first few minutes. Unwood soon, gained the ascendancy, and its backs were frequently dangerous. In a passing rush Carey went over for H. Stevens to convert, and soon after James sent F. Stevens over from a blindside movement, the winger scoring before the defence realised he had got the ball. With an 8 points lead, and the backs seeing more of the ball, Unwood attacked vigorously, and Sydenham's infrequent assaults, led by Guy and Rothwell, were usually well stopped by Roach, who kicked brilliantly. Sydenham, however, continued to work hard, and finally McKenzie dashed over for an unconverted try. In the second spell a marked change took place. Unwood no longer dominated play, and soon after the resumption Guy ran well to send Grimes over. Thus encouraged, Sydenham played better, but a magnificent movement initiated by Roach let the Lhvwood backs race away. F. Stevens scoring in the comer, and Unwood led. 11-6. Excitement ran high when H. Davis scored for Sydenham and converted his own try to level the scores. Sydenham pressed and from a quick, clean heel. McKenzie passed to Davis, to Guy. who shot through a gap and wheeled round two defenders in a moment. H. , Davis converted and Sydenham was leading by 16 to 11. Unwood tried desperately, but over-anxiety spoiled some promising movements, and the game ended without further score. Mr H. A. King was referee.
