FAST, EVEN GAMES ON SATURDAY WINS FOR SELWYN AND SYDENHAM UNIVERSITY AND TRINITY DRAW All three senior hockey matches on Saturday were fast and even, although the standard of play was not brilliant. With the grounds in fair order and the weather fine but cold, conditions were favourable for clean, fast stick play, but a tendency to shoulder opponents and striking sticks spoilt good hockey. University set up a strong defence to hold Trinity to a draw in a game that was in favour of University. Although Selwyn was without two of their regular players, they beat Redcliffs by the odd goal in three, and Sydenham beat Technical by a similar margin in a fast, clean game. Trinity is now a point and a half in the lead of Technical, with University half a point behind in third place, and Redcliffs and Selwyn tie for fourth place. The following table shows the positions of the teams:—

TRINITY (0) v. UNIVERSITY (0) University held Trinity to a draw in a %ame that was slightly in favour of University. The teams were:— University—D. M. Hall. R. Shlllito, B. Denham,, A. Buchanan, C. V. Walter, C. Louisson, I. Corich, H. Thomas, E. Prebble. B. D. Duffield, and R. Hurst. Trinity—H. Barnhill. R. Parrott. J. May, T. Brown, D. Loader, E. Thomas, R. Dickie, C. Salomon, G. Jones, E. McCormick, and E. Davies. • ■ The Trinity attack lacked its usual sting end combination, and there was a (need for a good scoring man in addition jto Jones. D. Loader in the halves played ’well, but Duffield beat him with pace and stick ~work.. Neither May nor Parrott was as sound as usual, and but for sound strokes by Barnhill University would have scored a win. Both R. Shillito and B. Denham played, well in University’s back line, and their halves were greatly improved. Play opened briskly, and University had a chance when Corich centred right across, field to Hurst, who went through to Trinity’s circle, where Parrott blocked his shot and conceded a corner, of which no use was made. Davies, Salomen, and Jones broke away for Trinity, but Davies's centre was Intercepted by Shillito. Trinity hammered at University’s goal, but brilliant defence by Shillito and Denham kept the goal clear. A quick shot by Salomen was met by Hall, who kicked clear. Hurst made some useful runs on University’s left, but was stopped by Brown. Duffield broke through from half-way, but lacked support and lost possession. Half-time came with no score: Trinity 0, University 0. The second spell opened with University attacking strongly. Hurst went down, to be stopped by May, who sent Jones and Salomen away in a promising run until Walter Intercepted. A spell of midfield play ended when Loader came out of a scramble to reach University’s circle, where 1 Denham beat him for possession Duffield went nearly the length of the field in a solo effort, only to lose possession in Trinity’s circle. Better support would have made a score certain. In the final stages Trinity was battling hard for a score, but splendid work by Shillito and Denham kept the goal clear, and the game ended with no score: University 0/ Trinity 0. Referees: Jfessrs C. C. Holland and E. Cummins. SELWYN (2) v. REDCLIFFS (1) Selwyh had a rearranged team,' M. Lohrey and L. Dawe being replaced by M. Watson and J. Andrews, the latter playing his i first game this season. N. Burtt replaced Watson in the halves. The standard of play was poor, and Redcliffs had shghtly the better of the game. Good defence by J. Smith in'goal'and Kearne and Hocking in the backs, saved Selwyn from defeat. In field play, Redcliffs forwards went well, but were missing opportunities in the circle. The teams were:—

Selwyn—J. Smith, A. Hearne, N. : Hocking, A.-Wootton, T. Burtt. N. Burtt, J. Andrews, M. -Watson, J. Wormald, C. Cornish, and R. Moir. - Redcliffs —R. Slack, R. Thomson, S. Bowden, W. Bowden, H. Le Page, R. J. Donkin, N. Bowden. E. -B. Radcliffe, E. Radcliffe, J. Coleman, and G. Bowden. Attack? were freely exchanged In the early phases of the game, which was very even. T. Burtt battled hard to break up the Redcliffs offensive movements In the early stages, but finally Moir accepted a pass across field from Watson arid netted from a difficult angle. Selwyn 1, Redcliffs 0.

W. Bpwden blocked a Selwyn raid and N. Bowden went down to centre to Coleman; and a score seemed certain when Hearne • beat • Coleman for the ball and cleared well upfield. A passing bout between Wormald and Cornish carried play to Redcliffs circle, where clever - defence oy Thomson gave relief. Le Page and W. Bowden were keeping the Redcliffs front line well supplied With the 1 ball, but the forwards' were not combining well and the passes from the wings were hot accepted. Play for the remainder of the spell was mostly in midfield, with no advantage to either side, and half-time came with the score:— Selwyn 1, Redcliffs 0.

On resuming Redcllffs set the pace, Coleman going through to be stopped by Hearne. A centre to E. Radcllfle rpade an opening which Smith blocked and Selwyn forced play back to the other end, where wormald broke through to notch Selwyn's .second goal. Selwyn 2, Redcllffs 0. Redcllffs held play In Selwyn territory for a while, and Smith was called on to stop shots from Coleman and E. B. Radcliffe. Selwyn took up the offensive to gain several unproductive penalty cdrners, and finally Thomson and W. Bowden gave relief,. and play went to the other end. where a melee in Selwyn's circle gave E- B. Radcliffe a chance to find the net. Selwyn 2, Redcllffs 1. The closing stages of the game were fast' and exciting, and there was too much shouldering and pushing for good hockey. Hocking cleared well when Redcllffs were pressing hard, and the game ended with the score:—

Selwyn 2, Redcllffs 1. ! Referees: Messrs R. Grade and E. Fox.

, SYDENHAM (2) V. TECHNICAL (1) « Sydenham scored the second win to a fast and even game with Technical, where the outstanding feature was the •olid work of the Sydenham back division. The teams were:— „ _ . _ Sydenham—H. V. Bhind. E. Dash, .R. Hamilton, W. Perry, A. Hall, A. Smith, R. Simpson, R. Luke, V. Guy. R. Busbridge, and R. Milne. „ ' * Technical—F. Kiddey, E. Rogers. A. Rogers, J. Anderson, W. Cole, Beattie, J. Grlmley, K. Norman. A. Norman, E. Pickup, and C. Ballinger. „ __ Sound defence by E. Dash and R. Hamilton gave Sydenham the victory. Technical’s 'offensive- movements lacked sting and cohesion. The Sydenham halves were very fair, B. Hall being the best of the ■line. Sydenham's front line is working well since Guy and Rusbridge changed .. places, and there was a nippiness in their raids that kept the Technical defence guessing. Offside play lost Technical a good chance early in the game, and Sydenham took up the attack which tested the Technical goalkeeper. Grimley put Technical in a scoring position with a neat centre, and Beattie tried a shot which went wide. Sydenham broke away, led »y Guy, but E. Rogers relieved. Grimley went down With a clever run. to be stopped by Hamilton. Technical set up a series of raids,' but Sydenham’s defence neld. Luke and Milne led the Sydenham forwards in a promising run, but Milne s , centre went begging. Anderson stopped a Sydenham rush and started the Nor- ,, man brothers in a passing rush which was Intercepted by Dash. Offside lost Sydeni nam a chance, when Guy was in posses- . , Sion. Technical swept down on Syden- ' fianis goal in a solid rush, but Hamilton relieved. A penalty corner to Sydenham brought no advantage and ■ was quickly transferred to the other end, where Ballinger took advantage of * yonound off Rhind to score Technical s ®niy goal, Half-time came with the score: Technical 1, Sydenham 0. .Sydenham attacked early in the second , “Pell, but solid defence by A. and E; Rogers kept the goal intact. A. Norman , was prominent in a Technical raid, and snot was kicked out by Rhind. Syd|®nam retaliated. Guy and Rusbridge reading a strong offensive which ended
