FURTHER RACE ON PROGRAMME

WESTPORT JOCKEY CLUB ARRANGEMENTS FOR: MEETING AT RICCARTON A race for two-year-olds has been added to the Westport Jockey Club’s programme for the one-day meeting at Riccarton on July 9. This race is the Maiden Stakes over five furlongs. At a meeting of the club, preliminary arrangements were made for an excursion train to run from Inangahua Junction on the night before the meeting, Westport people to connect with this service by motor buses. ■ Messrs J; Menzies and W. T. Slee (secretary) were appointed to interview the Railway Department and motoring firms. Messrs C. H. Thomas (president), Slee, A. Colvin, and W. Scanlon were appointed a committee to work in conjunction with the Canterbury Jockey Club in running the meeting. A request from the Buller Hockey Association to use the centre of the course for playing grounds was referred to the grounds committee to come to some amicable arrangement. The association said that it was prepared to do work in putting the ground in order.

WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL LOAN FOR PROTECTIVE WORKS IN ARAHURA* VALLEY Mr Ashley was reappointed the council’s representative on the District Council of the Highways Board, at a meeting of the Westland County Council. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister for Labour saying that because of the high cost of the proposed Dorothy Falls-Styx road it Was not possible to make a favourable recommendation for this work. Mr D. J. Evans was appointed to represent the council oh the Westland centennial organisation. The County Clerk submitted the signed agreement by the Arahura Valley . settlers for a loan of £SOO for river protection, saying that out of 36 settlers concerried* three objected to sign. In connexion, with a request from the Harihari branch, of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union that it would be in the interests of ratepayers if the council would meet monthly, the chairman moved: "That the council meetings be continued as at present, every two months, with such special variation as may be considered expedient from time to time.” An amendment by Cr. McLean, that the council meet monthly, was lost and the motion was carried on the casting vote of the chairman. It was ; decided to strike a general rate of seven farthings in the £ on the capital value oh' the rateable property, in. the norths central, and southern ridings, and to strike the annual recurring rate of one farthing in the £ upon the rateable capital value of the special rating area in the Kbiterangi district for the Camelback protection works. The council decided to raise a loan 0f.£500 for protection works in the Arahura Valley arid to levy a special rate of five-eighths, of one penny in the £ upon the rateable value in the special rating area in the Arahura Valley. - - • - • Mention was made of the long service of Mr D. J. Evans, who has been county clerk for the last 47 years. The chairman-said that much of the success of the council had been because of the faithful service of Mr Evans. / PERSONAL NOTES GREYMOUTH Mrs T. Isherwood, of Huntly, is visiting Rimanga. Mrs E. Mr R. F. Hayles, railway ■ traffic inspector, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Miss .S: - Anderson, of, the nursing staff of the Christchurch Public Hospital, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs G. Anderson. Mr J. E. Rundle, Collector of Customs at Greymouth, will leave in about two weeks on transfer to Wellington as assistant sub-collector. He will be replaced at Greymouth by Mr C. E. Butcher, first clerk at Wellington.

Mr D. Calwell, who will leave today to take up an appointment on the engineer’s staff of the Wellington Harbour Board, was presented with a fountain-pen and eversharp pencil by members of the. The Totara arrived this morning from Westport and will sail to-night with coal for Miramar. • . , The Titoki arrived this morning from Tarakohe arid will sail to-night with coal for New Plymouth and Nelson. The Plrte will sail to-morrow with timber for Auckland. • The James Cook is loading timber for Melbourne, and will sail to-morrow. The Waimea left Wellington yesterday fori Westport ■ and Greymouth, with general cargo. She is due here to-morrow to load timber for Port Waikato. The Kakapo from Wellington will load here to-morrow morning for Auckland, instead of the Kaimiro. The Hokitika is expected to leave Wellington to-morrow for Greymouth and Hokitika, with general cargo. •The Poolta will leave Wellington on Monday with - Greymouth and Hokitika cargo. She will load for Miramar and Wellington on Wednenrtay. The Gael is due on Monday from Auckland to load cargo for Jackson’s Bay. She will sail on Wednesday. The Greymouth, cargo loaded into the Kaimiro at Auckland will be transhipped at Wellington to the Poolta. * PORT OF WESTPORT WESTPORT, May 27. The Totara arrived last evening from New Plymouth, loaded bunkers, and sailed later for Greymouth to load for Miramar. The Wingatuiis loading for Wellington, and is expected to sail to-morrow morning. The Kartigi is due from Napier to-mor-row to load for Napier, Auckland and Kloreroa.
