AUSTRALIANS' IMPRESSIONS OF NEW ZEALAND

XO TUT" KDITOI. OX TH* KEM®. Sir,—ln. to-day’s issue your corres-. pondent, Mr Davies, recalls his experience during his recent visit to Australia with the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Contingent, and cites the general impression regarding New Zealand under a Labour Government. Might I also, as a member of the contingent, relate my experiences, and also that of many others. Everywhere—on the trams, in the streets, and in the houses —our Australian brothers expressed the opinion that New Zealand’s present position, with rising costs, is almost identical with Australia’s five years ago. Many were the forecasts but all were directed at our “backing the wrong horse.” England s and Australia’s experience of a Labour Government were recalled, and also that of South Africa, where, after one term of office, the electors gave the knock-out In no uncertain manner,

and this, I note, has again been their emphatic verdict recently.—Yours, etc., DIGCjEK. May 26, 1938.

SO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—*! was interested -in, Mr Fred Davies’s letter on “Australians Impressions ,of New Zealand,” as experience on the trip was that they were only interested and wanted to ascertain what individual, .members thought of things I arrived at that conclusion owing to the fact that, on each of the two joy rides, I heard the driver asked leading questions of that description, and on .each occasion, although the, occupants of the cars were not all the ' same, noh °f y ™?* enthusiastic, although it was made clear that our party included all shades of opinion. . . . . If the > prevailing opinion m Australia, or rather, I should say, Sydney, is as your correspondent says, instead ox blaming the cables he should blame the Lang Government, which New South Wales has not yet - £ ° rg ° tt^’ which statement, is. easily, .proved by th Lab^r o mder Mr Lang and Labour here have much the same policy, but the difference is that .Labour here struck rising markets, whereas Labour there did not.—Yours, etc...
