While Canterbury residents slept last Saturday night, members of the Southern Depot, New Zealand Corps of Signals, carried out some interesting exercises. In the darkness,, the unit operated against an imaginary enemy force advancing over the 'Canterbury Plains. Radio telephony, radio telegraphy, field cables and dispatch riders played an important part. A long route of cable was established, much of it on poles through Canterbury townships and the motorised cable section, under the Command of Warrant Officer L. J. Pearce, did good night work. The wireless section, Lieutenant H. P. V. Brown and Sergeants L. Park, T. H. Bain, and C. L. Harwood, and several "operators, worked over considerable distances, and it is expected that this section will develop into a very efficient team. The dispatch riders of the unit made good the new Army motor-cycles. Major H. M. Foster, N.Z.S.C., visited the unit during the exercises.
