MAGISTRATE’S COURT

WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) CONVERTED BICYCLE

Harold Douglas Bell, a labourer, aged 49, for whom Dr. A. L. Haslam appeared, pleaded guilty to the unlawful conversion of a bicycle valued at i. 4, the property of Alfred Charles Sands, at Christchurch, on May 24. Sub-Inspector W. E. Packer said that Bell, who was the worse for liquor, was taken to the hospital after a minor accident and, when discharged, rode away on a bicycle which he took from outside the institution. Dr. Haslam said Bell was in a dazed condition, and thought his own bicycle had been left at the hospital. Bell was convicted and ordered to pay costs.

IN POSSESSION OF GREY DUCK A charge of having grey duck in his possession without lawful authority was preferred against Walter. Albert Armstrong (Mr R. N. C. Hill), on the information of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr M. J. Gresson). Armstrong pleaded guilty. Mr Gresson said Armstrong had raised seven young duck with an incubator and had told a ranger that he intended to liberate them; but the society could not accept this statement. Counsel for Armstrong said the duck were hand-reared and were kept as pets. Defendant still denied that he was going to sell them. The Magistrate said that, as defendant was on sustenance, he would not impose a penalty, Armstrong was convicted and ordered to pay costs, FACTORY NOT REGISTERED George Bettle was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs for having failed to register premises as a factory, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. For the Labour Department, Mr S. E. McGregor said that Bettle had employed two girls bottling and labelling at his home in Norman’s road for about 12 months. There was not sufficient ventilation for the premises to meet with the department’s requirements, had registration been applied, for. Bettle said the premises were spotlessly clean and the ventilation was good. UNLICENSED RADIO SETS
