TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME r The Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting to-morrow is likely to attract racegoers from all parts of Canterbury. The programme is the most attractive arranged by the club for many years, and the racing should be full of interest throughout The field for the Ashburton Cup must be considered unusually strong for a suburban fixture, and it is a fitting reward to the club for its progressiveness that so many high-class middle-distance horses should be brought together. The Flying Handicap has also attracted a remarkably good field, containing most of the best of the province's open sprinters. The win-and-place system will be in use. The track is expected to be in excellent order, and the going should be suitable for all classes of gallopers. A special train will’ leave Christchurch at 9.35 a.m.
The following horses are likely to be well supported;—y. Longbeach Hurdles: Hunting Bag. Grampian. - Eiffelton Hack Handicap; Nightcalm, Lady Leigh, Great Memory. Selma Trot: Quest, Tonioro, Cavalcade. Ashburton <■ Cup: Studley Royal. Davolo, Rebel Lad. Trial Stakes: Night Hawk, Gay Parade, Every Port. Fairfield Hack Handicap: Rabble, Wagner. Settlement. Rakaia Trot: Wharrum, Llewellyn’s Pet. Wee Potts. Plying Handicap: Paper Slipper, Ponty, Waitaka. The programme is as follows:

NOTES ON THE RACING (THE PRESS SpecUl Service.] WANGANUI, May 12. A Good Performance Lone Raider's performance In winning the hurdle race was a good one. Begorrah took the lead with Master Hector five furlongs from home, and was well clear at the second-last fence, looking to have the race'in safe keeping. Here Lone Raider put in a sensational run. and, getting on terms at the last fence, gave Begorrah no chance of heading him again. Begorrah might have won had his rider been more alert to the danger that suddenly arose; but it is doubtful. This pair were well clear of the rest. Artful Dodger was a goor third. The favourite, Porltitl, lost is chance when McDowell broke a stirrup iron early in the contest. He continued in the rate, and finished sixth. It was the winner’s first start in a hurdle race. Te Hula led to the first fence, and fell. The winner looks a real hurdle find. Favourite Outpaced
Royal Tinge, favourite for the Maiden, was outpaced from the start, and although he ran a fair race, he was never a possibility, Aria led practically all the way. Comefarlum moved up handy on the turn and headed off Aria in the ‘Straight; but the latter came again in the 4ast bit and
snatched victory on the post. Flying Acre, fairly well back early, put In an appearance on the turn and ran on for a very creditable third, and then came Trllltha. Royal Tinge, and Irish Orders. Irish Orders was in behind Aria throughout; but weakened In the straight. Cometarium s performance was a good one, for with the winners seven-pound allowance he was giving away nearly a stone and a half. Royal Tinge Is not a sprinter.
Led All the Way Charade, who looked in great condition, led all the way to win the Century Hurdles, and always appeared to have it won She set an easy but steady pace for a mile or so. and over the last six furlongs she began to move along at a pace which gave most of her opponents trouble. Aurora’s Love stuck to her throughout, and after Iddo and Brlgadore had made ineffectual attempts at getting the lead. Riotous loomed up; but It was still left to Aurora’s Love to challenge Charade In the run home. She had the winner under pressure, but without hope of success. Riotous was a good third, with Brlgadore handy. Royal Llmond was never able to go the pace. The surprise of the race was the showing of Aurora’s Love and Riotous, who were inconspicuous in their earlier efforts. Although beaten, Iddo and Brlgadore ran good races. The latter
should Improve. A Big Surprise Collodion brought off a big surprise when he beat the favoifrlte. Conveyer, in the Balgownie Hack. Collodion was never further back than second. In behind Gay Hunting, with the favourite also well placed on the rails. Others handy were Thala, Spender, Entheos, and Hunting Mint. Collodion took charge on the turn, and was well clear into the stralght Conveyer came very fast at the finish, but just failed to head the leader. They finished well clear of the others. The winner. who now carries the same colours as Tiger Gain, was possibly a bit lucky to beat Conveyer, on which Goulsbro came a little late; but all the same he did it well, and just missed third money by Inches Thala had every chance, but Galteemore came from several places back in a strung out field. Another that similarly improved his position was Joe Louis. The winner gave his trainer a nasty kick above a knee in the birdcage after the race.
Exciting Finish Couitt Willonyx, the winner of the Grandstand Steeplechase, did not appear on the scene as a possibility until the last five furlongs. Up to that stage Don Erma, Arctic Star, Royal Fire, and Forest Glow had all been In front, and Forest Glow took the lead with a mile to go. He was not displaced until the second last fence, when he was headed by Count Willonyx. At the last fence, however. Forest Glow was again on terms, with Royal Fire very close up, and Arctic Star hanging on. There was an exciting, finish.. Count Willonyx just heading off Arctic Star with Forest Glow and Royal Fire close up, and Don Erma not far away. Sporting Song was .very sore, and took no Important part in the running. Arctic Star looked a bit unlucky, and should be heard of again on the trip, especially over a longer journey. Decisive Win Gaily was favourite for the Connolly Handicap, and she won decisively. She began well, and occupied second berth to the pacemaker, Relpar. until the five furlongs, when she took sole charge. Passion' Fruit, Relpar, and Brazen King were all under pressure behind' her a long way from home, and she eventually won handsomely from Passion Fruit, with Catalogue a good third, then Brazen King, Happy Landing, Relpar, and Dutch Girl. Catalogue ran a patchy race.
The Winter Oats Mittie showed appreciation of the better going and won the Winter Oats in fast time. She began best, with Orate, Debham. Alunga, and Notium, and in spite of Grate’s efforts, she kept, the lead. Orate went with her to the straight, Debham getting chopped back on the turn, where Alunga was lying third, followed by Johnny Walls, Bodyline. Alloa, and Notium. Orate dropped out as they turned for home, and left Mittie well clear. Ridden out. she won by more than two lengths. Johnny Walls held off Alunga for second. Great Hope came from well back to get fourth, followed by Bodyline, Orate, and Aureus. Mlttle’s time on the track was too much for her opponents. Favourite Wins Erebus, favourite for the concluding event, was always in a winning position. Red Witch began best, with Golden Pam and .Clooneen. Erebus ran to the front at the top of the straight, and bad the race won there. Red Witch was just .as comfortably second, from Min Lu, with Sam’s Choice fourth, followed by Clooneen, Aymon, and Hunting. The winner outclassed his held. Red Witch ran a good race for one just out of the maiden class. Gold Glare whipped round the wrong way at the start, and took no part in the race.

Track Work at Riccarton
In spite of a heavy frost, the No. 7 track at Riccarton provided good going yesterday, faster tham on Tuesday, and practically all of the horses to race at Ashburton to-morrow were galloped. Gillie beat Palmyra over five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec, the last three in 38sec, and Lady Leigh easily accounted for Nolana over the same ground in Imin 2 3-ssec, the last three in 38sec. Grey Honour ran six furlongs in Imin 17sec, Parakino accompanying him over the last five. Studley Royal and Happy Night strode over a mile in Imin 44 3-ssec, finishing together. The latter will be ridden by the apprentice G. Watson in the Ashburton Cup, and must be considered a good light-weight proposition. Broke Away
Paper Slipper and Swordstick were to have galloped five furlongs together, but the latter broke away, and Paper Slipper was timed to run the distance in Imin 1 3-ssec. Swordstick was held back over the final stages, and the pair finished together, but the value of the gallop was lost as far as Swordstick was concerned.
Linguist and Golden Chest ran five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec, and Improvident and Greek. Gold took. Imin. 4 2-ssec. Over Six Furlongs
There were several useful tasks over six furlongs. Great Bramble and Every Port ran the distance in Imin 16 2-ssec, and Wine Card and Nightcalm recorded similar time. Bright Prospect and Master Dingle took Imin 17 3-ssec. The latter, a four-year-old by Shambles from Wattle Bloom, is now one of S. Barr’s team. There was very little between Rebel Lad, Mungatoon, and Davolo at the end of a mile task, the last six furlongs taking Imin 17 3-ssec, Dividend and Pelmet covered six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec._ and Patuma and Merry March occupied Imin 19 3-ssec, while Flame Queen took Imin 20sec, and Great Star Imin 19sec. Grey Honour, assisted over the last five by Parakino, ran the distance well
in Imin 17sec. Phalanx and The Wrecker Were together clear of Stealamarch in Imm 18sec, the last three in 40sec. Rabble easily beat Waitaka in Imin 17 4-ssec, the last three in 38 l-ssec, and Lockit followed in Imin 17 l-ssec. Half-mile Sprints Night Hawk galloped half a mils in 51sec, and others over this distance included Gay Parade and Gay Lyric 50 3-ssec, Silver Sight and Wagner 52 l-ssec, Settlement and Ruling Star 50 3-ssec, and Passenger 50 4-ssec.
Useful Work Willie Win galloped a mile in Imin 45sec, the second half in 54sec. He will be ridden in the Ashburton Cup by A. Messervy.
Over Hurdles Hunting Bag (J, Murfitt) and Courtyard (A. Leach) were companions over four hurdles. The former gave a fast and clean display, but Courtyard did not impress, and blundered badly over the last obstacle. Haulbowline (G. Ridgway) carried out a similar task without any mistakes and at a sound pace. Novice Steeplechasers Tomcat (A. Stove) and Chanteur (A. Leach) negotiated five of the schooling steeplechase fences. Both jumped carefully and were very tired over the last, which Chanteur hit heavily, and he lost his rider. - To-morrow’s Riders
Riding engagements have been made as follows for to-morrow’s meeting at Ashburton:—C. Wilson. Rebel Lad, Parakino, Night Hawk, Waitaka; J. McFarlane, Rex Maitland, Last Refrain, Silver Slipper, Linguist; L. J. >£lll4, Stud!** Bpyal. Lady Leigh.

Coming Back Curie, rising 10 years old, is displaying a good deal of dash at Greenmeadows, under the charge of W. McKinnon, who also owns the gelding He is likely to contest both flat anc jumping races this winter. Reappearing at Wingatui Black Banner has completely recovered from the sprain he received a the Birchwood Hunt meeting at In vercargill in March, and is workinj Pleasingly at Riverton. All going wel in the meantime, the Balboa geldinj is to make his next appearance at th< Dunedin winter meeting, his missioi being the Otago Steeplechase. A Doubtful Case Scotsden pulled up very lame afte: contesting the Otautau Steeplechase last month, and it is doubtful if hi will ever race again. Scotsden wai expected to go a long way as a steeplechaser, and although he won at Win ton, his form had not been outstand ing. Early Trouble Lighter, who was pulled up shortly after the start of the Otaua Handicaj at Pukekohe last Saturday, was fofinc to have suffered a dislocation of thi hip, which was caused when be jumpec from the barrier. It. is likely to. be two months before he has fully recovered, and it is ill-luck for his owner Dr. A. McG, Grant, who purchased’the Illumination—Rita Lass gelding onlj last Friday. Progeny of Vaals A striking aspect of the results of recent meetings in the Auckland area has been the consistently forward running of the progeny of Vaals. Taking the two days of the Auckland Racing Club’s Easter meeting, the two days at Avondale, and the day at Pukefcphe, it is found that in 17 flat races, Vaals horses were 22 times placed, gaining eight wins, six seconds, and eight thirds. The winners were Valimeen, Valamito, Prival. Gold Vaals (two): Dragon Moth, Cheval de ■ Volee, and Barrister. Seconds were secured by Cheval de Voice,- Pocket Venus (two), Dragon Moth, Valamito, Vaalso; and thirds by Valamito, Kaspian, Barrister, Tonnerre (two), Vaalso (two), arid Pocket Venus. Rex Maitland, engaged at Ashburton to-morrow, will be the first of the progeny of Vaals to race in the South Island. Carbine’s Year The Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting of 1938 should go down
in turf history as “Carbine’s year.” AS of the long-distance races were won by horses of that line, and all the winners referred to are by a single sire. The Buzzard, who was imported for the Lyndhurst Stud, Queensland, by Mr J, G. McDoiigall. L’Aiglon (a three-year-old) won. the Sydney Cup. Old Rowley won the Cumberland Plate and the A.J.C. Plate (two gules and a quarter). Gay Knight won the 13 furlongs Dan gar Handicap, Cathartes dead-heated in the St. Leger, and Buzzalong was third in the Doncaster —all sons of The Buzzard, son of the Derby winner -Spion Kop and Valescure. by Swynfbrd. The Bend Or line had the best horse racing, perhaps the best horse seen in Australia up to a mile or more, in Ajax. It also had the best two-year-olds in Nuffield and Pandava and the winner of the Doncaster Handicap, Hamurah. The best - filly. Bonheur de Pere. comes of the Hampton line, through Heau Pere.
