The work of recovering the bodies continued throughout the night, and early this morning officials of the company and inspectors descended into the pit to make a preliminary examination to discover the cause of the explosion. Nation-wide 'sympathy is expressed with the bereaved families of the small village of Duckmanton, where most of the miners lived. One of the earliest messages received was from the King, who stated; “The Queen and I were shocked to hear of the terrible explosion and the heavy loss of life involved. Please convey our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives and those who are still m anxiety. We should like also to be informed as to how the injured are progressing.”
