FAEMEES’ UNION BANKS PENINSULA BRANCH REMITS FOR CONFERENCE CONSIDERED The Banks Peninsula branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union met at Duvauchelle recently to consider remits for presentation to the annual provincial conference. Mr P, E. Moore (president) presided. The following sub-branch officials were approved:—Pigeon Bay: President, Mr J. C. C. Reynish; vice-presi-dent, Mr W. M. McSweeney; secretary, Mr D. N. Waghorn; delegates, Messrs J. C. C. Reynish, R. W. Kelly, W. M. McSweeney, A. Goodwin, and D. N. Waghorn. Okain’s Bay; President, Mr P. E. Moore; secretary, Mr E. N. Moore; delegates, Messrs A. McKay. Colin Mason, J. A. R. Mason, F. G. Harris, and E. N. Moore. It was decided that the Akaroa, Duvauchelle, Le Bon’s Bay, and Little Akaloa sub-branches be asked to appoint representatives. Mr J. C. C. Reynish moved a remit dealing with New Zealand’s defences and pointed out that the attendance at territorial camps indicated a lack of interest. The following remit was carried: ‘‘That the New Zealand Farmers’ Union would like the assurance of the Government that it is doing its utmost to make the defences of New Zealand adequate.” Mr F. G. Harris moved the following remit: “That the Farmers’ Union is in favour of the hours of work in cheese factories being based on the time it takes to make the day’s cheese, and that the wages of cheese factory workers be on a flat rate instead of the present time and overtime system." The remit was carried, it being pointed out that the present system of wages paid to factory assistants was tending to spoil the quality of cheese produced. A remit for the provision of a veterinary officer for each district was considered. Mr F. G, Harris said a dairy instructor was to be appointed for Banks Peninsula, and it was suggested that this instructor should have a knowledge of veterinary work. He said the want of a veterinary officer had been severely felt during the last season. It was decided to write to the Department of Agriculture asking if one were available and pointing out the serious position in which local farmers found themselves, PROLIFIC YIELDS APPLE AND PEAR CROPS AT OXFORD The apple and pear crops at Oxford have been very prolific this year. X-EAY PLANT AT AKAKOA

REFUSAL BY HOSPITAL BOARD STRONG PROTEST AGAINST ACTION . A strong protest was made at the Banks Peninsula branch meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union about the action of the North Canterbury Hospital Board in refusing to install an X-ray plant at the Akaroa Hospital. _ Mr J. C. C. Reynish, Pigeon Bay brought forward a remit of protest at the board’s action for the provincial conference, but after hearing the explanation from Mr R. A. Mould, the district’s representative on the hospital board, Mr Reynish withdrew the remit. Mr Mould explained that the application had been turned down by the hospital committee, though he had explained that Akaroa patients had to travel 104 miles to be X-rayed, and had to suffer the discomfort of travel. He said there were at least 30 patients a year sent to Christchurch for X-ray examination by the local doctor and that if they paid £3 each and the plant cost only £250 it would soon pay for itself. He suggested a petition be prepared from the district to the hospital board, and said he was sure no one would refuse to sign it. It was decided that a petition be circulated throughout the district for signatures and when completed, that this be forwarded to the board. Mr Mould was thanked for attending the meeting and explaining the matter.

DOG TEIALS

BANKS PENINSULA COLLIE CLUB OPENING DAY OP ANNUAL EVENTS The annual trials of the Banks Peninsula Collie Dog Club were commenced yesterday at Little River, on a paddock lent by Mr S. S. Barclay. The day was fine and there was an Interested gathering of residents of the district. The entries were scarcely up to those of last year. In addition, the dogs nominated from Kurow by Mr I. Anderson did not compete because of a bereavement in Mr Anderson’s family. There were 32 entries in the first class —the heading, bringing back, and holding in the ring. This event was concluded in the afternoon, and some dogs in class 2 made their runs before the end of the day. The trials will probably conclude to-day, if not they will be completed to-morrow morning. On the whole the work was indifferent. The trial ground is steep and rather exacting, and in addition the sheep, which were provided by Mr E. A. Williams, of Port Levy, were a strong lot and provided an exacting test. Some dogs failed to get very far in their runs, and this caused the event to be completed mu»h earlier than would otherwise have been the case. Only five dogs succeeded in securing the full points for holding in the ring. The class was won by W. Ross’s (Methven) Toby, which put up a good run. scoring 55 points in a possible 60. The next dog scored 52 points. The work in the second event, as far as it went yesterday, was much better. The judge was Mr H. Ingram (Culverden). The following are the details:— CLASS I (OPEN)— Heading, Bringing Back, and Holding in Ring. About 450 yards. Time limit. 8 minutes. First prize £7, second £4, third £2, fourth £l. W.
