STRATHEONA

HOME-TRAINING HOSTEL A meeting of the board of managers of Stratheona was held on April 29 m the Young Women's Christian Association club-rooms, Timaru, there being present MesdamesA. H. Gillingham (chairwoman), E. £ Andrews, M. Guild, J O. J. Oliver, T. W. Satterthwaite, S. Unwin, Miss Macdonald, and the honorary secretary, Mrs J. A. McLeod. It was reported that further apph ca : tions for enrolment as trainees had been received from South Canterbury, North Otago, and West Coast districts, and would go on a waiting list to be dealt with in order as vacancies occur. The seven trainees in residence come from Waimate, Fairview, Pleasant Pleasant Point, Pareora, and Southland districts. The eighth trainee, who is from the Geraldine district, will go into residence early this month. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., the founder, had given the trainees an address on the aims and ideals of Stratheona. MrBurnett said that girls of the right temperament, seized with a desire for home life in the country, were needed. He explained that all great objects have a simple beginning, and that by good management and attention to details, the trainees are being equipped for efficient home-making. They are at Stratheona to soak in the high purpose of home training. Mr Burnett expects the trainees, when training is completed, to give at least two years to South. Canterbury homes. Any trainee who is not satisfied, or who is not prepared to show, when her training is completed, what Stratheona can do, Mr Burnett invited to pull out now. Mr Burnett pointed out how much of the success of Stratheona depends on the trainees, on their work and their enthusiasm—a success based on service to others, and efficiency, not on a monetary standard. Mrs Harper (matron) reported that Mrs W. Raymond had given the girls a demonstration on the use of the heat storage cooker, and that Mrs A. H. Gillingham had given a talk on food values, explaining the different varieties of building material the growing body needs. Many gifts for the hostel have been gratefully received. A piano is needed. The official opening of Stratheona will take place on Saturday afternoon, May 21.
