Mrs W. H. Helmore, who has been staying in South Canterbury with Mrs E. C. Studholme and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, has arrived in Christchurch for a short visit before returning to the North Island. In recognition of their services to the residents Mr and Mrs A. W. Beaven were elected life members of the Redcliffs Burgesses’ Association at its recent meeting. Mr R. W. Morrow and his daughter, Miss Anne Morrow, who have been visiting Australia, will return to Christchurch this week. Mrs Spencer Rowley and Miss Alison Rowley (Sumatra), who have been visiting Mrs Cecil Preshaw, Khandallah, arrived in Invercargill on Saturday to stay with Mrs G. I. Moffett.
Mrs Howard Turton, who has been visiting Mrs T. M. Rankin, Invercargill, returned home on Saturday. Miss Helen Buchanan (Merivale) is the guest of Mrs A. F. Speight, Redcliff, Southland. Mr and Mrs Hassall England (Shirley), who spent Easter with Mr and Mrs Donald Burnett, “Te Akatarawa,” Kurow, and later a few days in Dunedin, have returned home.
Miss Lyndsey Thomson (Montreal street), who has. been spending a holiday in Sydney, will return to Christchurch to-morrow.

The annual meeting of St. Hilda’s Old Girls’ Association was held at the home of Mrs Melville Dearsley, Glandovey road, Christchurch. The following members were present: Mesdames J. H. Upham, C. E. B. Muschamp. M. B. Warren, R. L. Ronaldson, A. R. Elley, L. Richards, E. Reay, Dickson, Macbean Stewart, T. W. Tothill, J. Ferrier, M. Dearsley, Bowron, Larcomb, and Misses Tait and Mollie Chapman. , The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs M. B Warren; vice-presidents, Mrs E. Reay,’ Mrs D. Macbean Stewart; committee, Mesdames Tothill, Dearsley. Ronaldson, and L. Richards. Misses B. Tait and M. Chapman; honorary treasurer, Mrs A. Elley; honorary secretary, Mrs A. R. Larcomb.
DEBATING SOCIETY’S ANNIVERSARY
LADIES* COMMITTEE ENTERTAINS
On Saturday evening, at the home of Mr and Mrs W. T. Woods (Fitzgeraid avenue) , the ladies* committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Literary and Debating Society held a social to celebrate the committee’s second birthday anniversary. Earlier in the evening the annual general meeting had been held, and officers for the year were elected as follows: — _ _ , President, Mrs W. T. Woods; vice-president, Mrs W. E. Sewell; honorary secretary, Mrs IV, J. Jessett (reelected). , ~ . The ladies had arranged an excellent programme of games and competitions, under the direction of Mr Harold DentoThe prize-winners were Mrs Jasper Sewell, Mrs F. Hartley, Mrs H. E. Denton, Mrs W. J. Jessett, Mrs H. Bleasdale, Messrs A. Rennie, T. Hartley, J; Woods, and Peter Woods. The president (Mr A. Rennie), on behalf of th 6 society, thanked the ladies for their hospitality and for their services during the ■ last two years. He specially thanked the retiring president of the ladles' committee (Mrs W. E. Sewell) for the assistance she had given. ' . - Others present were Mr and Mrs I. S Rowberry, Mr and Mrs B. K. Elliott. CARNIVAL DANCE AT LYTTELTON Arrangements lor a special late train to leave Lyttelton at 1 a,m. have been made for the grand carnival dance to be held in the Excelsior Hall. Lyttelton, this evening. The feature of the dance will be the music which is being supplied by the band of the Ruahine. A large number of novelty dances are included on the programme.
