SCHOOL TEACHERS’ COURSE

INSTRUCTION IN INFANT METHODS

LARGE GATHERING OF TEACHERS AT RANGIORA

A refresher course for school teachers. arranged by the management committee of the Ashley branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, was held at Rangiora on Friday and Saturday. There were 72 teachers present from schools between Hawarden and lectures were given by Miss James (crafts mistress). Miss D. Baster (infant department), and Mr J. Masterton (arts), of the Christchurch Training College. The subjects covered included the illustration of stories, methods of decoration, and their application. Subsequently lectures were given on the psychology of the young child and infant methods generally giving the practical appli-» cation to the previous day’s instruction as applied to infants.

WETTEST APRIL ON RECORD

EXCEPTIONAL FALL AT RANGIORA

On April 28 and 29 51 points of. rain was recorded at Rangiora, making a total for the month of 6.77 inches. Ram fell on 13 days of the month. The average for April for the last 19 years is 1.67 inches. In April, 1937, 1.53 inches of rain fell. Last month was the wettest April on record the next highest figure being m April, 1925, when 4.24 inches fell. The total rainfall for the four months of 1938 is now 13.41 inches, as compared with 7.41 inches for the same period last year.

The North Canterbury Gun Club held its opening shoot at Rangiora on Saturday in ideal weather. There were 13 competitors, and some good scores W fn 6 the* trophy shoot I. G. Watkins (17yds). D. Doreen (14yds), J-Truscott (13yds). and A. N. Turner (12yds) all shot the possible, and divided the stakes, Watkins’s shoot was a first-bar-re shot the possible in a nine-bird sweep, and divided the stakes.

AMBULANCE WORK AT CUST

A meeting of the Cust Divisimi of the St. John Ambulance Association was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. A lecture on ’’Sports Injuries was given by Dr, E. W Minty (Oxford), divisional surgeon. _ , Superintendent B. F. Early announced that Mr S. Cowens had been appointed ambulance officer. Mr E. Henderson was elected secretary.

LABOUR PARTY MEETS AT CHEVIOT

A well-attended meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Labqur Party discussed the matter of application of the New Zealand Farmers Union for the extension of the time in which it should place its case to the select committee on National health and superannuation. fV ,_ The application was made on the grounds that the time allowed was too was decided to write to the committee informing attemot had been made in Cheviot to the views of members of the Farmers’ Union on this matter.

SOCIAL EVENINGS AT WEST MELTON

A social, organised by MiKi L. Watson and Mr C. Page, was held in the West Melton Hall recently m aid of the Sw Anglican church at Halkett. Music for dancing was played by Haydons orchestra, Christchurch, and exteas by Miss Lucy Thompson and Mr c. w. Walker. Euchre winners were: Women, Whs Thompson 1, Mrs J. H, Harvey 2; men, Mr Candy 1, Mr Jowers 2. Other competitions were won by Mrs Thompson, Mrs Simms, and Mr A. Fronting. Mr L. Davis was master of ceremonies. _ A euchre and dance were held in toe West Melton Hall in aid of the West Melton Horticultural Society and the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Competitions resulted: Men, Mr W. Fronting 1, Mr L. McHwraith 2; women, Mrs J. H. Harvey 1, Mrs T. Summerfleld 2. For dancing music was played by Mrs W. Hayes. Mr A. Summerfleld was master of ceremonies.

Twelve nominations have been received for the Rangiora Borough Council. The candidates are as follows: Messrs C. S. Ayers, F. T. Ager, W. Fahey, W. T. N. Keir, F. E. Martyn, C. F. Meyer, G. A. McAlpine, J. N. Lews, H. R. Taylor. W. C. Prosser, H. J. A. Benjes, W. K. Nicholson. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) is the only candidate for the mayoral election.

Mr A. Adair presided at the annual meeting of the Kaikoura Collie Dog Club The balance-sheet showed receipts to be £1403 10s, and expenditure £9B 10s 7d, leaving a credit balance of £4l 13s 3d. MAGISTRATE’S COURT AT KAIKOURA

A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Kaikoura was held before Messrs A. B. Clark and R. T. Pope, Justices of the Pe Francis Henry Gordon Guildford was charged with two charges of theft of money. He was convicted and sentenced to three months’ hard labour on the first charge and convicted and discharged on the second. It was stated by the police that he was on probation and had 42 previous convictions.

KAIKOURA. RIVER BOARD

The following have been nominated for the Kaikoura River Board elections:—Messrs A. Keenan, E. A. W. Smith, J. Taylor, Charles Moran, and H. Bleasdale. Only five members are required, and no election will be necessary.

BALL AT LEESTON

ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE OLD BOYS

In spite of wet weather there was a large attendance at the annual ball of the St. Andrew’s College Old Boys, held at the Leeston Town Hall. Among the visitors were Mr J. B. Mawson, principal of St. Andrew’s College* and Mrs Mawson, Mr Keith Wafllace, president of the Old Boys' Association, and Mrs Wallace, and Mr G. A. M. Hilson, secretary, and Mrs Hilson. DANCE AT HORORATA The fifty-fifth anniversary of the Loyal Coleridge Lodge, M.U., L0.0.F., was celebrated with a dance held in the Hororata Town HalL Many visitors from surrounding districts and Christchurch attended. The committee, with Mr R. Banks as secretary, had made excellent arrangements, and Mr Fred Smith’s orchestra (Christchurch) supplied the music. Extras were, played by Mrs H. A. Oliver, Misses N. Gray, M. Charles, and G. Jewell. Messrs A. D. Oliver and P. Isherwood were masters of ceremonies.
