NAZARETH HOUSE CHAPEL

FOUNDATION STONE LAID

An impressive ceremony yesterday afternoon marked the laying o t the foundation stone of the new chapel which is to form part of the extension of the buildings at Nazareth House. The stone was laid by Bishop Brodie, and those present included the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland), the W. Hayward, M.L.C., and Mr £. £ Howard, M.P. Bishop Brodie, who welcomed the visitors, said that a very large addition to Nazareth House was planned for its work of charity. He paid • tribute to the manner in which the Mayor had carried on the work of his predecessors in administering funds for the relief of distress. The assistance had been spread out most generously, in 'a manner which had satisfied all the citizens of Christchurch. Referring to the work of Nazareth House which, since its foundation 80 years ago in London, had spread to every part of the British Empire, he said that it had won the gratitude of all sections of the community. ; The Mayor expressed, his appreciation at being invited to the ceremony, and spoke of the value of the work that was done at Nazareth House. The Very Rev. Dr. J. A. Kennedy referred to the contribution towards the cost of the chapel made by the sisters, who were the main contributors and made many sacrifices for this purpose. A further tribute to the work of the sisters was paid by Mr Hayward. , Mr Howard said that it was to be hoped that the chapel would prove an inspiration to thousands and possibly send forth a man or a woman with a message that would bring peace to the world. The hope that there would always be room for charitable work even when superannuation and health schemes were inaugurated was expressed by the Rev. Dr. V. Geaney, who said that charity did not consist in a surly paying of taxes but in generous giving.
