INTER-DOMINION TROTTING

LAST DAY OF MEETING

PROSPECTS DISCUSSED

The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has had very bad luck in its efforts to decide the Inter-Dominion championship, and although many of the visitors waited until Friday in anticipation of seeing the final for the championship, most of them have now left for their homes, and only a few will return for Wednesday's meeting. In Canterbury, however, interest in the big race has not grown less keen, and the final will be watched by a big crowd. , , The wet weather not only made .necessary several postponements, but it also seriously affected trainers in keeping their horses up to concert Pitch, for conditions on private tracks have been no better than they have been on the metropolitan- course. The weather for the last two days has been fine, and there is every promise of the championship being decided under favourable weather and track conditions. This race will create the greatest Interest, and although the Lucky JackParlsienne bracket will probably be the favourite, strong support will be accorded several others, including Supertax, U. Scott, Blair Athol, and Plutus. R, B. Berry’s bracket is entitled to be favourite, for out of nine heats this trainer has won five. Parisienne has scored victories over one mile and a quarter, one mile and a half, and two miles, and she stands a very good Chance of being crowned the champion. With ordinary good fortune Lucky Jack might also have been a threeheat winner, but his wins over a mile and a half and two miles justify any support that may be accorded him. Parlsienne has now scored 23 points, pnd has won £1575 in stakes. Lucky Jack has scored 17 points and has Won £IOSO. Supertax may not be a genuine tworaller. but the brilliant work that he Put in at the end of a mile and a half suggests that he may be quite at home over a mile and five furlongs, the distance over which the final will be run. Supertax has scored 18 points and £1125.

U. Scott, after two moderate performances over the shorter distances, showed rare form over two miles when he had the field scrambling from the start. A repetition of this form would find him very hard to beat. He will again be raced in the closed bridle in which he did so well in his last race.

Plutus won well over a mile and a quarter, but he was a very tired horse when chasing Lucky Jack and Nervie’s Last in the third qualifying event. He is possibly a better sprinter than a stayer, but with the consistent Blair Athol, Nervie’s Last, and Evicus, he Will have admirers. The two consolation races will give an opportunity to horses that have failed to make the champion grade, and evenly balanced fields should provide great races. A Protest Dismissed

Pirates Last had won the yhitford Handicap at Auckland on Saturday he was placed third for galloping. and first place and dividend ware awarded to Stalky, with Braethe third horse, placed second. The owner of Braemer then protested •gainst Stalky being awarded the stake •n the ground that he was trained by Sp unlicensed trainer and not by T. •wa, as stated in the race book. The Protest was dismissed.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday, will close to-day at 8 p.m. Nominations for the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting will close tomorrow at 9 p.m‘. Champion to be Retired Roi I’Or,' the hero of many notable battles on the trotting track, will make his last appearance with the colours up on Wednesday and for the rest of his days he will enjoy the run of Mr P. Brown’s property in South Canterbury. He will be turned out in a good paddock during the summer and stabled In the winter months—.the just reward for a horse that has performed so honestly, Roi I’Or did not start racing until he was four years old and at no stage of his career has he been over-raced. He has not won the New Zealand Cup, although he made several valiant attempts, but the Free for All. the Dunedin Cup. Auckland Cup, and the New Zealand Gold Cup at Wellington have all gone to the credit of his owner, Mr P. Brown. When the inter-Dominion championship was held at Perth several years ago Roi I’Or was the only New Zealand horse accepted for, but he suffered an injury at Melbourne and got no further than Adelaide, where he remained until properly recovered. Although Roi I’Or won many races he was several.times just beaten after putting up sensational performances. With Harold Logan -he holds the mile and a quarter record of 2min 36 2-ssec, and for two miles he has registered better than 4min 16sec more tunes than any other horse ever raced in the Dominion. Mr Brown is quite satisfied that Roi I’Or does not now possess the brilliance that characterised his racing some years ago and he does not think it fair to ask the horse to undergo once again the long, arduous training necessary to fit him for public racing. Roi I’Or has been a great racehorse and an ornament to the race-track.

Oamaru Trotting Club The inter-Dominion championship has taken attention away from other trotting fixtures, but the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday promises to be one of the best held by the club at this season of the year. A particularly good field has been nominated for the President’s Handicap, and included are several improving pacers, notably Cantata, a winner at Addington, and Carver Doone, a doubler winner at the Hawera meeting. The latter is in' C. S. Donald’s stable and is owned by the Christchurch sportsman, Mr W. E. Stickings. The handicapped horses in this 4min Slsec class race include several brilliant performers in U. Scott 24yds, Morello 36yds, Renown’s Best 36yds, and King’s Warrior 84yds. The Australian mare, Lady Childewood, is also engaged, but it is not likely that she will remain in New Zealand very much longer. A Speedy Pony

Pola Negri is a great pacer for her size, and as the pony allowance is claimed for her in saddle races she is particularly good with the weight up. At Oamaru she is handicapped on 2min 17sec for a mile and while smart pacers are opposed to her, she will give a good account of herself. Coming

Mazaire is a useful type of pacer by Jack Potts in C. S. Donald’s stable, and at the last Ashburton meeting he was well supported and showed a lot of speed in the maiden pacers’ race. It was his first appearance with the colours up and it seemed that this lack of experience was the reason for his defeat.

YEARLING SALES AT SYDNEY

NEW ZEALAND PURCHASES

Details of the Sydney yearling sales received by mail show that the majority of New Zealanders operating sought staying pedigrees. The cable messages erred in crediting Mr H. Bayly with buying another colt by The Buzzard, but he purchased from the same stud a yearling bred on sound staying lines. It was Mr W. H. Gaisford who bought The Buzzard—Culfort colt so closely related to The Buzzer, at 650 guineas. The yearling Mr Bayly purchased was the chestnut colt by Fox-Earth from Delhi Queen, at 325 guineas. FoxEarth, who stands at the Lyndhurst Stud, Queensland, along with The Buzzard, is by the Ascot Gold Cup winner, Foxlaw. His oldest stock are now only two-year-olds, and he has been represented by only a few runners to date. Delhi Queen, the dam of Mr Bayly’s purchase, is by SyceRhyney, ' by Grafton—Hempie, by Lochiel—Nonsense, by Albany—No Name, by Traducer from Emma, by Gil Bias—Emily, by Operator. This is New Zealand’s famous No, 18 family, which in recent years has given us such high-class horses as Silver Scorn, Nightmarch, and Silver Ring. Emily is a half-sister to 10, ancestress of Trenton and Beauford, and to Waimea, ancestress of Nightmarch, Silver Scorn, and others. Nonsense was a sister to Disowned and Oudeis, both winners of the New Zealand Derby, and a half sister to the dam of Euroclydon, one of the best three-year-

TUEF GOSSIP Reminders Acceptances for the Amberley Racing Club’s annual meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s office. Nominations for all events at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting on May 19 and 21 will close at 9 p.m. on Monday next. Nominations for the Marlborotfgh Racing Club’s autumn meeting on May 14 and 18 will close at 9 p.m. to-mor-row, The programme Is a very attractive one, the principal event, the Marlborough Cup, being worth £165, Including a canteen of cutlery, fcnd will be run over a mile and a quarter. The Plaxbourne Handicap, on the second day, carries a stake of £l2O, and will be run over a mile. There are two other open events, and hacks are well provided for. First Meeting The newly-appointed stipendiary steward, Mr C. F. Hartland, opened his career by officiating at the Reefton Jockey Club’s.meeting last week. He will probably make his headquarters in Christchurch. Rider Suspended

At the conclusion of the last race at Reefton on Saturday, the judicial stewards were called together to consider a protest lodged by Mr T, W. Butler, owner of Windward, against the jockey J. McCauley and the winning horse. Clubman, for jamming Windward nearing the finish, and against the jockey for allegedly striking Windward with his whip during the final stages of the race. The latter protest was dismissed, and McCauley was suspended lor a month for interference, but it was decided that the judge’s placings be not altered. The evidence of the riders concerned in the finish indicated that though there was interference caused by Clubman cutting across the field, there would not have been any different result. As there was no electric light on the course, the inquiry was conducted in candlelight, while the pay-outs had to be made in similar circumstances Evergreen The veteran Slippery won another race at Woodville on Saturday. This brought his total starts to 150, and he has won 36 races, his stake earnings amounting to more than £3OOO.

Omitted Settlement 7-7 was omitted from the list of handicaps for the B. G. Starky Memorial Handicap at Amberley. Appropriate Trophic* At the conclusion of the principal event at Reefton on Saturday, a silver cup was handed to Mr W. Stewart of Hokitika, owner of the winner. Monipere, and a stop-watch was presented to the trainer, C. J. Walsh, of Omoto. while the rider, J. W. Jennings, received an order for a new pair of riding boots. The success of Monlpere was not well received by a section of the crowd, but keen enthusiasm was shown in the presentation ceremony, and calls for the usual round of cheers werh heartily responded to. From Sydney The yearling colt by Excitement from Calcite, purchased at the Sydney sales on behalf of F. D. Jones, arrived at Riccarton last week Calcite was imported from England in 1922. and was raced for two seasons by Jones for Mr H, A. Knight. She is by Rock Flint (son of Rock Sand) from Milanaise by Marco. Excitement is by Hurry On, and is already represented at Riccarton by the promising three-vear-old Comus. Interesting Matings

In addition to Entreaty, Cymenc, dam of Cylinder and Cyrillian, is to be sent to Australia to be mated with Beau Pere, and both mares will be shipped in August, Others to be sent over at the same time include Zarene. dam of Lowenberg, and the latter’s half-sister. Trim, Comedienne, dam of the Wellington Cup winner. Royal Artist. Joy Bird, ,and another mare that is being imported from England by Mr W. Higgins.

An Early Winner Mr Standfast, now the property of a Waikato syndicate, was recently represented by his first runner in Ireland (where he had two years at the stud before being sent out to New Zealand). This was a two-year-old. Ever True, and the youngster won very impressively at The Curragh over a distance of five furlongs. Mr Stanfast is a half-brother by Buchan to Beau Pere and Gay Shield, and he will have his first season in the Dominion this year. Royal Chief's Half-Brother

Modiste 11, dam of Royal Chief, was sold at the Westmere Stud dispersal in January last for 600 guineas to the New South Wales breeders, Messrs Thompson and Basche. She had a colt foal by Beau Pere at foot, and was in foal to Phaleron Bay. The colt was submitted at the Sydfiey sales at Easter, and elicited keen competition, being sold for 950 guineas to Mr W. J. Smith, of Sydney, who bought Beau Pere at Westmere for 3300 guineas. Another Bargain Mr Smith also secured at Westmere the brood mart Timid and her colt foal by Beau Pere for 325 guineas, and the youngster was sold at Sydney for 1000 guineas. Timid is due to foal again To Beau Pere. Nominated for Te Rapa Nominations as follows have been received for the principal events on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting:— Waikato Hurdles, of £400; one mile and three-quarters—Donegal, In Command, Javanet, Ambition, Silk Sox, Lady England, King’s Archer, Simint, Jolly Beggar, Royal Limond, Huski.e, Jan Ridd, Celtic Lad, Kilberis, Orac, Red Hawk, Artful Dodger, Iddo, Golden Spahi, Mia Acrea. High Star, Rua King. Killadar, Innes Lad, Master Musk, Full of Scotch, Valpai. ' President’s Handicap, of £500; one mile and a quarter—Siegmund, Wotan, Enge, Waitaka, Gay Rose, Glen-

olds that ever raced in New Zealand. This colt was foaled on September 9. Mr Gaisford’s colt was foaled on September 23. 1

Blandford Blood The Hawke’s Bay studmaster, Mr R. H. W. Holden, purchased a filly by Harinero from Headlight for 170 guineas. Harinero is a son of Blandford and a winner of the Irish Derby and other good races over a journey. This was his first representation at the sales. Headlight is by The Sybarite from Glare, by Bronzino—Sestos, by Multiform. It is the same family as that to which Whittier and Belgamba belonged. Mr W. H. Gaisford’s Constant Son colt, bought for 750 guineas, is a brown out of Lute String, by Comedy King— Luteola, by Martagon—Scene, by Springfield—Helioscene, by Hampton. He was foaled on September 18 and belongs to the No. 1 family. Thereis some wonderful staying blood in this pedigree. Mr M. J. Moodabe’s colt by Constant Son, for which he paid 450 guineas, is out of Girton Girl, by Linacre—Miss Arlington, by Multiform—Lady Arlington. by Grafton. There is plenty of this blood in the Dominion, Girton Girl being a sister to Acre, whose stock are represented very liberally throughout the North Island. Mr R. Stead’s black filly by Pantheon is out of Queen of Night, and is closely related to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner The Trump. Queen of Night is by Comedy King— Taffle. by Junior—Tlpplngdale. by William the Third—Chelandry. Queen of Night is a half-sister to Koanie, dam of The Trump, and Tippingdale is threequarter sister to Popingjay, the dam of Magpie. Mr W. Bailey received 220 guineas for a colt by Lackham from Royal Queen and 190 guineas for a filly by Lackham—Great Lady. A chestnut colt by Lackham—Pantoon, on, account of Mr W. McEldowie, realised 260 guineas.

thawn. High Test, Malegigi, Light Comedy. Tybalt, Gold Vaals, Valanuto, King Musk, Shy, King Rey, Cheval de Voice, Master Brierly, Prince Rangi. Te Rapa Steeples, of £750; about three miles— Clarion Call, Valpeen, Tudor, Artie Star, Forest Glow, Riotous, Kinkle, Mio Lume, Huskie, Bryce Street, Lucidus, Neal, All Irish, Wykemist. A Bare Feat Superior Guard’s feat at Avondale of winning two successive races is rare (dead-heated in second), and the last to accomplish it in Auckland was Little Ruse at Tauranga about two years ago. Hurdlers at Avondale Having his first race over fences for some months, All Irish showed himself to be better class than the others in the Hobsonville Hurdles at Avondale by winning very nicely, after being handily placed all the way. All Irish joined High Star in the lead in the straight, and was much too good in the run home, drawing away at the end to score very convincingly. All Irish should be at his best for the winter meetings. High Star ran another good race and should continue to pay his way. Martaiu’s Relations . When the yearling brother to Martara was purchased at the Trentharo sales in January. 1937. there were some who thought that Mr W. R. Kemball had paid enough at 350 guineas. But the following day Martara won the Douro Cup with top-weight, and on the final day he took the open Summer Handicap, which immediately made the purchase appear in a brighter light. It is now interesting to learn that this colt won his first race recently in the Maiden Two-vear-old Handicap at Williamstown. He has apparently been resold by Mr Kemball. as he raced in the colours of Mr F. K. Manson under the name of Mukama. He started at a longish price in the ring and paid a still better price on the totalisator, so his success appears to have been in the nature of an all-round surprise. A few days later, Martara’s older sister, Puroto, also a maiden, was a winner at Feilding. Meeting Abandoned

After inspecting the course on Easter Sunday, the committee of the Onkaparinga Racing Club (South Australia) decided to abandon the Great Eastern Steeplcbase and Onkaparinga Cup meeting this year. In 48 hours five inches of rain had fallen at Oakbank, and in front of the grandstand the water was a foot deep in places. The abandonment was the first in the history of the Onkaparinga Racing Club. Although the decision of the committee has resulted in a direct loss of about £2OOO, the actual cost to the club for the year will be about £4OOO when the cost of stall and administrative expenses are taken into account. The club has no source of revenue other than the .Easter Monday meeting. It insured against 10 points of ram falling in Adelaide between 7 and 11 a.m. on the Monday, but there was scarcely a drop in the city, and the £IOOO, which would have assisted in defraying the loss, will not be collected. _ Nuffield

Nuffleld will be the favourite for the next A.J.C. Derby, according to “Pitbt” of the Sydney “Referee." Results of the two principal two-year-old races at Randwick generally have considerable bearing on what starts favourite for the A.J.C. Derby. In the last three years the winners of the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes—Young Idea. Gold Rod and Ajax—headed the Derby quotations, and. though each was beaten, probabilities at present favour Nuffield being the popular choice for the next Derby. In each of his starts al seven furlongs he has been successful. and it seems certain that in the weights for the next Melbourne Cup he will be placed on top of the others of his age. The Sydney Sales At the Sydney yearling sales a fortnight ago including a number of yearlings submitted in a supplemeatary catalogue. 159 youngsters were sold for 29,005 guineas, averaging 182 i guineas. This compared favourably with 162 sales for the three days of the 1937 series for an aggregate of 36,647 i guineas, and an average of 162 guineas. Results throughout the three days wore satisfactory. Judged by the average, the sales were the best for eight years. The highest price for a yearling this year. 2800 guineas, was the highest in any series since 1929, but there were only six yearlings which reached 1000 guineas or more this year, compared with 11 yearlings to reach that sum last year. Although the stock of the first-year sires sold well, the results were not as good as expected, for, taking a line through the Melbourne sales, it was anticipated that the progeny of Medieval Knight, Madagascar, Chatham, and Harinero would create exceptional competition. The breeders in each instance were, however, satisfied with the results, more particularly as the youngsters sold went into establishments where they would receive every opportunity of proving their worth on the race track.

A Promising Purchase Gay Chou. Mr W. Devon’s purchase In Sydney, is a six-year-old bay gelding by Gay Lothario from Chouette, by Magpie from the Imported mare Doux Verre. He showed form last season, for after winning a trial stakes at Caulfield he went on to the A.J.C. autumn meeting and won the Rous Handicap, seven furlongs. He then changed hands, and in three other starts had two wins. These Were a flying welter at Kensington and the Doomben Newmarket, of £I4OO, six furlongs, over the straight six, carrying 8-3, the topweight being Pamelus with 9-11, who finished fourth. Early this season he developed first-class form and won first up in the Campbelltown Handicap at Warwick Farm, beating several fancied Epsom candidates: ran fifth in the Canterbury Stakes won by The Marne, with Mala third and Talking fourth: and was third to Mohican and King’s Head in the Quality Handicap at Hawkeshury. He was a fancied horse for the Epsom, but wag unable to run closer than sixth to Gold Rod. The next day he was third In the Shorts, and his only other placing in three more starts was a second at Moorefield. He has not run since the A.J.C. January meeting. Provided Gay Chou is sound, Mr Devon appears to have made a good purchase. Mr Devon, who formerly resided in the Taihape district, won a big sum In a sweep a few years ago. and Is in partnership with J. T. Jamieson in the two-year-old Activity, a winner at Randwick on Saturday.
