CANTERBURY CLUB

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT

To mark the end of Its seventy-eighth season, the Canterbury Rowing Club held its annual smoke concert in the boathouse on Saturday evening. Mr R. JHobbs presiding over an attendance of 50 members and guests. In opening the proceedings Mr Hobbs moved the election of Mrs J. R. Evans as a life member of the club, as a fitting recognition of the many years of service to the club of Mrs Evans and the late Mr J. R. Evans. This was carried unaniToasts to the King and to the Canterbury Rowing Club were honoured, Mr W. M. Graham replying on behalf of the club. In reviewing the season s activities, he mentioned the formation of the Lake Forsyth Regatta Club, and congratulated that body on the very successful regatta held at Lake Forsyth. . . . Mr . Club trophies were presented by Mr H The’ toast of the Canterbury Rowing Association was proposed by Mr Buchai Congratulations to the Union Rowing Club lor its success in wining the head* of-the-river competition and toe D.C.L. trophy for most points in rog&tt& rscing, and to the Avon Rowing Club for its meritorious performance in winning the interclub eights at Stewart’s Gully were offered by Mr Read in proposing toe toast of “Sister Clubs.’’

SYDNEY. May 1. Exciting finishes were seen in toe great public schools’ forty-sixth annual regatta, held on the Nepean river in splendid weather. The head-of-the-rlver champion eights were won for the second year in succession by the Sydney Church of England Grammar School (North Shore), with Sydney High School second and Newington College third. The race was won with a margin of three-quarters of a length, with five lengths between second and third. The time was Bmin 26 l-10sec. The first fours were won by Sydney High School, hotly challenged by North Shore, who were defeated by only a quarter of a length. Scots College was third. The second fours were won by St. Joseph’s, who beat Sydney High School by a lengtn and a quarter, with North Shore Jhird. the same distance away.
